Recently acquired, this is Joe, my new good friend and travelling companion. He's a bit on the chubby side due to lack of exercise but we'll soon fix that. I've saved him from the vet's needle as his owner was going to get rid because he killed her cat. His punishment will be a lifetime of beach gallops, surf frolics, long hikes and meaty meals! He has a great temperament (cats aside) and will take very little training. 1st priority this afternoon will be to teach him the route home from the pub! Attachments:

Haha! Cheers Carol! Yes he is but 'tis windy here and I've just now taken the photo. It's blowing up his haunches and making him look a right bloater!

He looks a fine fellow. He's welcome to have poo in, and scrabble around in my back garden, as it is still to be fixed.

Hey great dog mark. I had a Joe called Jack for 16 years and what a great dog he was. He was very intelligent and faithful. His biggest draw back was he was a bit anti social with other dogs and I think this is a trait with boarder collies. Like your Joe he was not a big cat fan either, I was always worried one would get stuck in his throat. I can see him having loads of fun and exercise in the near future and on meets. Really looking forward to meeting him. Jack could not pass a plastic bottle he would find them all over the place and chew them for hours. Here is a photo of him going on holiday one year. .... I'm glad you eventually found a dog, it will be a great pal on your travels. After he's remembered the route to and from the pub you need to start on recognising low bridges, sorry to bring it up again but it's got to be useful in the future.

Good start I am sure you do t need any advice about dogs mark the only thing I would say is your dog will always want to please you once you have earned his love and trust and that takes time to build up and not fair to expect too much too soon . Xxx ps Mia thinks he's a looker! Xx

Mark, you should put some photos up now, so you can do a before and after comparison in 6 months time.
I wish I'd taken more photos of Diesel when I first got him, in a real sorry state, only got a couple which aren't brilliant and they don't show the full extent of his physical problems.
Got loads of the bugger now, but it's difficult to think back to what he was like 18 months ago and just how skinny he was.

Aww he is so beautiful mark, I always am attracted to border collies with white faces like that, he doesn't even look fat to me just full coated (think I might have to adapt that term for myself!!) Mia has lost some weight btw , she has got her waist back now! Shes about the same age as Joe, will be 9 in July, hope we get to meet him this summer xx

I was going to say the same as Anne, about being full coated, especially after the winter. Rigg always seems to look slightly chubby in winter and people say that he's put on weight but if you see him wet, you can see that he is maybe carrying a little extra sometimes but is by no means chubby. He's always much slimmer in the autumn too as he gets so much more exercise in the summer than he does over the winter months.
I bet Joe's the same. Perhaps we should have a wet dog photo comp. He looks a big lad though, big as in sturdy and big frame rather than excess chubbiness.
Nice markings too, but be prepared, you are now gonna forever have a hairy van :-)

A prop forward's belly, it really does show when he gets out of the water. We're working on it though and he's nearly lost his lazy streak. Loping away well in front on walks now he's always keen to run and never reluctant to go out. Keeping it to early mornings and evenings in this warm weather. Two good meals a day but no treats yet except for reward. I remember the hairy van from my old boy Wills....kept on finding them even two years after he died! A wet T-shirt competition? Now you're talking!

I always get mine swimming in warmer weather, although not as long as Joe's, Rigg's thick coat then stays dampish for a good few hours afterwards, keeping him cooler. He does struggle in hot weather, and really needs to be able to get in water regularly to cool down. At home in winter, he is a fabulous draught excluder, his fave spot being to lie along the bottom of the living room door where there is about a 1 inch gap and a howling draught.
By contrast, Diesel is a sun and stove worshipper. At home he loves to toast each side of his bare belly, flipping over from side to side regularly, and now goes and sits in front of the woodburner as soon as I go to clear out the ashes and lay it ready. His sits there expectantly staring at me waiting for me to light it. He doesn't hear me tell him to behave himself from 3 foot away but he hears and recognises the click of the electric ignition on the calor gas heater from outside in the back yard and legs it inside to park himself right in front of it. He has to have a wetsuit for swimming otherwise he can only cope with the cold water for about 5 mins, and has to wear sunscreen on nose, ears, muzzle, bald belly etc in summer. I thought I could toughen him up by not bothering but have had to accept that he wasn't really designed to be an outdoors dog - he's getting there but he's never going to match a collie in terms of being suited for long days outdoors.

She did her usual snap and snarl to let him know who's boss but after that they were just fine. Now they mostly just ignore each other.
