The top is now cut off (ready to have flat hob welded on) and the door aperture cut. One thing to note; even though it was filled with water and left overnight before cutting, the inside of the cannister smells awful. I don't know if this is because the gas permeates into the metal, or the cannister is galvanised inside, if it is the latter I would suggest that it is fairly toxic and hands should be protected as well as a mask used when cutting, perhaps Nigel will advise?

I think it will be OK after you've had a few fires in it. How easy would it be to hammer the top flat and make a hot plate like that?

Could be done but would look a bit rough, you wouldn't be able to get an anvil inside of any sort. Then again it's all about function not looks!

thing about metal i always liked is its so much easier to stick together than wood,so you could simply get some 3mm flat bar and weld together then jigsaw into a circle. putting a line of weld on a bit of bar heats it red hot good for a nice sharp bend. as for the galvanised bit i'm not too health and safety, the bottles seem to have a bit of zinc on,not like galvanised bar, where the zinc ignites and burns with weird tendrilly smoke !

I've come to a bit of a halt. My son reckons that the 2mm plate I was going to use for the hob is too thin and will warp when welded and again when in use. He is going to get me some 6mm sheet which he said will be much better for the job and will retain heat for much longer once hot. What do you reckon?

3m is a lot better than 2mm,6mm is massive but as its a small part of it why not?

If that's a giant Cobb, you should be able to pick it up with your bare hands.
After you!

No, I'm waiting for my 6mm plate. All of the cutting is now done apart from the hob. Won't be able to get any further now though until after New Year when I get the use of the workshop again. (unless Julie buys me a welder for Xmas, which would be handy coz I've ordered her some sheet steel).

I've seen my friend who drives a lorry for the local re cycling company. He's going to sort me out a bottle. He also mentioned that they often have to collect caravans to be scrapped and he often gets bits off them before hand, heaters etc.

About 20 years ago, I bought a cheap caravan, took all the bits out of it, scrapped all the ally, turned the chassis into a trailer which I sold at a handsome profit!
