Building a bed.
I'm pretty sure I haven't understood n. brown's piece on WC.
Is this bed across the rear end of the van?
If so, are there two timber uprights glued to the steel wall plus one steel box section bar on top as a crossbar? And this arrangement at each side of the van, with three long timber joists spanning these frames?

i must learn to sketch on this ! if you have a bed across the back of a van,it's nice to access the space under without a leg in the way. let's say the bed is 2foot high. you stick, with gripfill or whatever, a 2foot high piece of 2x2 timber to each wall as close to the back doors as poss.you can then cut a piece of 30x30mm or 40x40mm steel tube to fit across from wall to wall and glue them to the tops of the uprights. on some vans these uprights can be just inside the door,on others they need setting back to give access to the rear lamps the centre upright can be 6mm ply with batten along both top and bottom edges ,and the front can be a timber frame or ply. so basically, once the top slats or ply base has been fixed ,it's a very strong bed ,with no big framework, completely supported from the floor, with good access to the rear, and the front compartment totally separate

Aha got it now. I did mine with 2 bits of 3x2 timber fixed together. They spanned all the way across the back doors. They weren't supported on 2x2 posts but on heavy duty steel angle brackets which were fixed to the back door pillars of the van.
