We cannot make our minds up ! One minute it is a build then we see an american ! Doh .One thing is for sure it will not be another English van . We worked out ours is falling to bits as it has had 20 or more years of normal use even though only 3 years old . Maybe a caravan is better as really am sick of the nasty build quality in motorhomes but guess a caravan would be the same . Sent from my Nexus 4 using proboards

Hymers and Hobbys have better build reputations.
The American vans look fine, but are built for US roads and US fuel prices. I wouldn't fancy running one over here!

Hi X we did a self build although it took us 12 months to complete was well worth the wait. We only worked on it at the week end and two holiday periods we were in no rush just wanted to get it right. Sprinter mwb high top just right size for us as is used for the daily. Having the layout how you want and spec to suit you are some of the advantages. Would recommend having a go have seen some really good conversions using all sorts of base vehicle some were buses have a look at smbcc web site might help you make your mind up.

Will try sbmcc trouble is we really do want a lot ! It will be home so want a washing machine and dishwasher and generator ! None of that cassette toilet nonsense either ! But then I see a yank with only 6 k miles for less than 20 grand you get a lot for your money .Lorries look good for space but for a nice low mileage one a lot of money then you have to convert .

Why do you need low mileage? 100k-150k is nothing on big truck. Speak to VW Alan as he converted a small artic with domestic appliances I think.

Have a look on www.forcevans.co.uk at MERCEDES ATEGO 1823L it may give you food for thought. I have noticed it's sold but if this is something you want maybe email them and ask if anymore come available they can contact you.

If you have the time and money then build your own, you'll get the spec you want and it won't be as flimsy .

I would love to build my own but don't have enough skills and it probably wouldn't be finished before I pop my clogs! The biggest decision is finding the right base van. I think once you've done that, if done properly, you can end up with a van that knocks the spots off coach builds etc. and for a lot less money! Vern is right about mileage, Charlie. Obviously you don't really want something that's done a quarter/half a mill or higher, but anything around a 100k, give or take, I would be happy with - specially if it's an old merc! No rhyme or reason as to why I think that, just feel that some of the older vehicles are better and simpler (and often cheaper!) to maintain engine-wise Ex-military vehicles seem to be a good buy, specially where they've been mothballed; they've often had very little use and can have incredibly low mileage. I assume you must have a budget? For myself, I would spend a little more initially on the right vehicle and worry about how to finance the full conversion afterwards. It is going to be your full-time home after all and you don't want to be spending loads maintaining a knackered engine or chassis for ever and a day

Charlie this looks the ideal tool for you. It will last you the rest of your life and it will still only be just run in. The mileage looks big but to these big boys its nowt. Great MOT on it so must be in good condition. You will have a job getting it into the gate at Greywell but should just manage it. You should have about £30k over at least when you sell your bus to make any alterations you need. Mind you Graham (Tiderus) is getting something similar but on a smaller scale so it will sure be tight if MTM has to fit both in at Caerphilly in the pub car park. Give it a coat of looking over and tell us what you think. .... Tom .... www.preloved.co.uk/adverts/show/111335033/truck-and-5th-wheel-motorhome.html

The collies can go in the junior bed over the cab. No shower room X but think of the savings on running costs!
