"Habitation checks" are largely a waste of time and money. £200 for a load of fluff and bollocks. Things like damp penetration, ventilation, fuses, and water leaks you can check yourself. They are just ticks in boxes for the inspection company - it is money for old rope! The real safety critical item is the gas installation and that is probably the only thing worth checking formally on a regular basis. A thorough inspection of the piping, connections, and valves, then pressurise the system and check for leaks. If you are not confident doing it yourselves, then maybe find someone on the forums who is competent and slip them £50 or whatever. Or, if you really want to go to a dealer, just ask them to check the gas system. It should be a lot cheaper. If you want to see what a habitation check consists of look here: www.southdownsmotorcaravans.co.uk/aftersales/habitationcheck/generic_habitation_check_sheet.pdfAs you can see, a lot of the items you can easily check yourself - eg Exterior fittings, locks, body panel damage, decals, toilet operation, operation of taps, leaks, water ingress etc etc

You can do it yourself, all you need is a damp metre and a lighter! If you know how to use a damp meter properly also most cheap damp meters are a total waste of money ! There is only one decent one on the market but you have to pay ! Yes I would agree but you joke about a lighter I have seen that done by many a plumber years ago !
