Seriously
I've had my dog in the car , then we had to put her in a travel cage in the tailgate , that was ok ish
I'm now a lone traveller ( occasionally)
I would like some advice on taking my little mutt with me , she has history , we rescued her 10 yrs ish ago and she has never really traveled well , cage always required
I'm guessing she hasn't got many more years left in her but I would really love her to come with me in the van , preferably on the passenger seat with harness , but I know that will never happen .
Any advice you fellow dog lovers can offer is greatly appreciated
( I am taking her out on a test trip in her cage tommorrow )
Hate the cage and would rather she would harness

It's great to have a canine traveling companion Most dogs really like cages as they represent a safe place, and it's their place. Make it like a den for her by putting a cover over it and she can get additional comfort from that. I liken it to when we were kids and loved playing in tents, (even if it was only a sheet draped in the living room!), there was that sense of being cosy and safe. My lot have the run of the house, which includes covered cages with the doors left open. They often like to snuggle up in them of their own accord. They are all very happy in the van/car but they prefer to travel in their cages. I have tried a harness but it would just get tangled up. You may want to check out 'Thunder Shirts', which can be very effective in comforting a dog that is stressed. Good luck, you will have great adventures together.

Beau travels in a cage and sleeps in a cage at home. She also puts herself in her cage when staying away in the van and at home when she is tired! I was surprised when she did got in it in the van when staying away as I thought she wouldn't want to miss anything but she always does it a lot now especially after a long walk. I was going to use the cage at home for a year when I got her but she likes it so much it stayed! I have a cover on it too so it must feel safe and cosy.
I'd definitely recommend a cage for travelling and as a bed in the van for your dog, I use a soft travel cage which is light and easy to move around. I strap it to the seat with a seat belt and off we go. When we arrive I often put it outside the van in the shade. Keep trying with the cage, it does work well once they get used to it.

Darby one of our dogs was an extremely nervous traveler to the point that he made himself sick with all the panting and shaking, we got a cage for the house with a cover over it and over a few months he slowly started to sleep in the cage in our dining room we always left the door open so he could go in and out as he wanted to, then we just put the cage in the van he went where ever the cage went now 4 years on he just climbs in the van and lays on the bed to travel. Poppy our older dog never had an issue as she follows us if we are in the van she is too if we go to the loo she comes too.

My 2 dogs have a cage in the van, their own bedroom, and they are both very content in it. Not only are they safe when travelling, but the van doesn't get trashed when they are wet and muddy. Mine is covered in an old duvet so snug in winter.
I've heard some really good things about the Thunder Vests mentioned above, am considering one for my rescued staffie who has separation anxiety and who tail chases and chews his tail obsessively when left, so has to be muzzled in the cage for his own good. He doesn't do it whilst driving, only when parked up and left in van.
The cage door is left open during the night and often during the winter the dogs choose to sleep together in the cage instead of on the floor next to my bed.

Daisy travels on the settee in the back of the van, with one of those seat belts that clips in,she wears her harness and is quite secure.Ig she is just with me in any vehicle then I clip her into the passenger seat belt anchor.Mind you she's a very good traveller and loving being in France! Just wish they'd pick the dog shite up.

I wish my girl would learn how to use a poo bag as well , would save me gipping with a squelchy bag in hand , but I digress , thanks for all advice , I took her out in the van over the w/e in her cage without cover ( it was daylight after all ) 5-6 hour round trip , I thought we were doing well after 3 hours , she calmed down and stopped "crying" but she wouldn't lie and relax , ( I was hoping to overnight with her not far from home )
I gradually made my way closer to home , stopping every hour or so for water and release of water , well after about 5 hours she started to relax and be nice and chilled except for sharp stops (tw@ts pulling out on me ) but it was never going to be .... I pulled up on the drive another hour later ........... well begger me she's fast asleep in her cage
Repeat in a few weeks lol

You know that old saying be careful what you wish for we did all we could to get Derby our little dog to go in the van it was such a success he now if we just go into the van to clean he gets so overexited thinking he's going out in it he drives us nuts howling and barking it's like he's running in circles shouting we are going in the van going in the van going in the van. You get the picture.
