Just been quoted £14,500 for repairs I can't believe that's a realistic estimate. I spoke to Nu Venture ( the company who did the van conversion) this morning, to find that the garage had been in touch with them for an estimate and was quoted around £4,000 although she was only going on the photos she'd been sent. Garage said Nu Venture quoted £4,000 just for the roof. He didn't know I'd spoken to them myself. This morning, after speaking to Nu Venture I spoke to Ageas who were going to contact Nu Venture re the work. Let's hope they did and had a more realistic quote! But it's not looking good is it?

New Roof £600 supply and fit (ebay)
Paint roof green £200
Roof light and fitting £400
Cabinets and lockers £600
Roof lining £200
Sundry electrics and sealing £200
Total £2200
That's a reasonable estimate.

I wonder if the garage had also offered to buy the van at scrap value if it was uneconomical to repair

Yes, there seemed something odd going on to be honest. The garage guy told me that if I buy it off insurers then the guy who quoted £14k would do it privately!

if that 85% rule applies to all insurance companies then you should get paid out up to about £7000,which should cover the repairs. this saga could go on a bit !
anyway shouldn't you change your avatar pic for a more up to date one ?

£!4.500 What a bloody scandal and I've not even seen it. Verns pricing up looks very reasonable but what about the insurance. I know it will be fully comp and I also know they will only pay what they estimate its worth. But have they made you an offer and have they said anything about getting it done on the insurance. Sorry if you have covered this somewhere carol and I have missed it. .... Tom ....

Insurers haven't committed themselves to anything Tom, although I thought they had when they told me to get it back to England! They're really dragging their feet and not being helpful in any way!

never mind all the hindsight and what ifs, complete waste of time beating yourself up,concentrate on now,and the next move. look up the ombudsman, and see what his role is . remember who's paying these insurance people's wages, you don't have to listen to their line of crap . if you're not up to having a confrontation, ask annie or marie to have a pop at them -- hang on ,they don't deserve that yet !

No use crying over split milk, I agree with that Anyway, it's in everyone's interest to minimize the loss. If you can demonstrate a cheaper quote that must be good. It is why they employ loss adjusters. I shudder at some of the repair scams and quotes that go on. Vets and pet insurance is the same, pushing up the bills wherever they can. Some people don't seem to mind, as they have this thing in their head about "recovering their premium" but in fact, all it does is to push up future premiums for them and for others.

Cheers Nigel....as you know I know the what if, if only mindset is pointless and I think I've done quite well not going there tbh. And I can be strong and assertive when I need to be. Got myself to and from France didn't I? On my own. Even travelled round India for 6 months on my own, though was a LOT younger then!

Unfortunately this is the way of the things, stick to your guns, hold your head up, they'll back down.use the experience and knowledge on here and the web. You're a wildcamper not a sheeple, be proud, be individual, and win.

Carol don't forget to let them know that this case is being followed by thousands of motor home owners on at least two forums. If it does not go fairly it could loose them a lot of custom on the next renewal dates. Who are you insured with by the way. .... Tom ....

Hi Tom, am insured with Ageas, through Caravan and a camping Club. As I've said before, don't know what to expect but they've done nothing for me. Thankfully, I'm feeling a lot stronger now and just want an outcome, even if it means losing the van. Which I don't want to do of course! Hope you're ok?

OK not much help maybe but I have the germ of an idea for a fix it meet up here with the use of an under cover industrial unit. Then all we have to do is persuade the likes of n brown and the other clever bug... sorry extremely talented peeps to get their horse drawn vardos on the road and head north for a week in loony land See how it pans out, if at all, but there might be another option to fix up the mean green camping machine, Carol. If insurers are playing silly buggers maybe try and go for the best way of getting it away from them and back where sensible and reasonable repairs can be made. Apologies for posts using mobile phone hate it

They are playing a game Carol. All financial institutions do this. They are your best mates when they want your money but don't want to know you when you want something from them. By dragging their heels in this way with everyone who claims, they calculate that a certain percentage will just give up and accept the pittance they offer. Stick to your guns!

Not a huge consolation for you but because of your "incident" I have now measured all the dimensions of my van so your experience may well have saved me and who knows how many others from similar misfortunes. And its also prompted me to look at changing my insurers as there's a couple of clauses that I'm not happy about (I got insurance in a rush and didn't read all small print properly) and I think that I'd probably lose out massively if something similar happened to me. So although it doesn't help you, you may well have helped me considerably without realising. Hope it gets sorted soon, such a shame to be without the van at this time of year. Big hugs, stay strong xxx

Bad news, folks.
The industrial unit I was hoping to rent has been leased by a business.
Back to the drawing board {sigh}
