Had a fairly spontaneous trip to Northumberland over spring bankholiday with my friend Martin, we both took Friday off work and travelled up on Thursday night, Monday was bankholiday so managed 4 nights away for one days holiday.
What a fabulous place it is too, empty beaches even though it was Bank holiday weekend, loads to see/ do - loads of castles in particular and plenty of good spots for wilding. All the beaches were really beautiful and everyone was very friendly - thoroughly recommend it as a destination
Our Itinerary was:
Thurs night -car park by Druridge Bay
Fri 2 hour walk on bach and round Drurudge Bay country park, Alnwick, museum, castle, stayed in carpark at warkworth with toilet,2 mins to beach, nice spot
Sat - gardens and Arboretum at Howick, Seahouses which we didn't like as too busy, back to Boulmer to car park right on beach, fish and chips in pub, think it was called the Fisherman?
Sun Bamburgh castle - its is amazing castle in incredible setting, on rocky mound high above stunning beach - but inside was very disappointing - full of endless bric a brac, snuff box collection, cabinets stuffed full of loads of dinner services, more like an antique shop than a recreation of a great historical sight - imho! The most interesting bit was a Viking emcampment where a group of Viking Reenactors had set up camp and were actually sleeping there in their own Viking style tents and doing displays of Viking fighting, craftworks etc bonkers but interesting (imho!) Stayed in car park by Chiswich beach, accessed by a long track that ends in a carpark at the sand dunes, short hop over to another incredible beach. Only people there were dog walkers, had the place to ourselves once they had all gone and had beautiful sunset to entertain us
Monday across causeway to Lindisfarne..only 150 people live there but hundreds arrive every day. There is strictly no camping on the island, and you have to park in a carpark when you get there which is fine by me as it means very little traffic on the island
If anyone could remind me of the password for entering wilding spots I will check if the places we stayed are in or not.
Will add some pics once I have remembered how to do it
