we have been thinking of down size to van based camper for some time which is best base van looking to pick up 2/3 year old and convert, i do the car/van auctions most week now part time retired . have time do self build now and got the right skills must be lwb high top

I think the Citroen Relay as it is the widest, and gives you more options eg sleeping across/layout choice/aisle space.
Sprinter/Tranny too narrow for some layouts, I think, but haven't checked dims of latest models.
Second choice Movano/Master.

The new Tranny may be OK. I know they revised the body, it may be wide enough.
But the online stuff is all gloss and waffle - I can't find pictures with lists of hard dimensions. They say the widest in class between back wheel arches... but they don't mention between body struts and panels. I think it used to be 1.670m on one of the older models and you need about 1.800m or close to it.

Nothing really wrong with the Maxus, I think it was the widest in its class at the time. Generally more dated technology than the latest continental vans and the continental vans of its era, gear change, mpg, gear box, radio, interior etc. Body shape more dated, but it is roomy. Supposed to be prone to some faults with wiring and fittings, but that's only hearsay. I have only driven one once, and it seemed a bit basic but quite competent. And they are cheaper for the reasons above, so if you can find a good example go for it!

Love my 09 Relay, 6 foot one inch double bed across rear even with two inches of celotex insulation each side. Some other good points, galvanised body, low floor (fwd), easy to drive, very good mirrors. Fairly straight sides...tapers by 150 mmm from 800mm above floor.

looking for 2/3 year old low miles in good nick going to look at relay as advised here also like tranny ,will put our van up for sale soon on flea bay then no how much got to spend on total project we have a autostrateus 56 plate at moment

You may be best going for about 3 years. This is typical manufacturer's warranty period and after that the big delivery fleet firms shift them off to auctions mostly bought by dealers.
You can either go to the auctions yourself and bid, or there's plenty at the used van dealers. That's how I got mine.
Usually 15-20k miles a year on a delivery van. Mine had 65k - just run in! But you can get a £20k late model van for £5-6k

I'm thinking those prices *may* on the high side. For example, I picked up a 56 plate Movano/Master 2.5 MWB 65k miles, for about £5,500 inc VAT in 2009 - OK that was 4.5 years ago now, but I didn't think prices had changed too much - I could be wrong. There's a fair bit of difference between the 2005 onwards Master/Movano models which were the new shape and had common rail engine and 6 speed boxes. So go for the later model if you can afford it as much better fuel consumption and smoother all round. Drives like a car.

Mostly down to loading then tyres and a bit of savvy . I think you lot need tracked excavators ? Mind saying that have been stuck in those and slipped down a bank all brakes on and bucket down now that was fun !

Yes, mine likes getting stuck and it's only 3.3 tonnes. Mind you I have those normal tyres on with 60 psi. Let the pressure down to 20 psi and let Charlie drive it would be OK.
Big difference camping and turning in little lanes, tree clearance etc. I noticed that on the convoy when I had to keep thinking of the bigger vans and their turning/parking.
Some idiot parked 0.7m off the kerb on the apex on one of the Applecross hairpins forcing Tom to reverse up 1:4 in 7.5m van (no power steering) in order to get round him.

My Kangoo Roo had to be towed off a field by a tractor, my Kangoo van had to be towed off sand and even got stuck on grit on a wet road then, only last month, my Berlingo-based Romahome got stuck on rough ground/gravel at Glencoe and needed a push (twice) from two (amused) walkers! There are many advantages of small vans though - they can fit beneath height barriers, park unnoticed between cars and attract no attention when parked in rural country lanes. As well as offering 50+ mpg they offer far more wilding possibilities and can get to the places larger vans can't!
