Unfortunately Kaiser lost his final battle for life. I went to see him at the vets this morning and he was just asleep like when I left him the night before. He was breathing very heavy but seemed at peace. The vet was away at the time so I spent a few hours with him in his observation cage. He had not drank or eaten for about three days. His tongue was out and dry so I kept putting water on it. He did not recognize me even when I called his name. He was well comfortable on a thick lambs wool blanket and a lambs wool pillow. He had a thick towel over him keeping him warm, he looked just like the grand kids had just covered him up like they did when playing with him. Then the vet arrived and gave me the bad news, he said he is just not responding to anything, so best to let him go. The words was like an echo as I nodded in agreement. At 12.45 pm he then shaved his leg and sent poor kaiser off to heaven. He never flinched or showed any signs of anything happening, he just gently stopped breathing so that was cool. It is hard to believe he climbed Goat Fell and the Upper Falls of Ben Nevice a few days ago, then went into such a rapid decline. I am now sat in the Co-op car park on Skye snivelling and wandering when or weather to catch the tour back up. I will stay here at least one more night then decide in the morning. I don't want to put a dampener on the rest of the holiday so will decide tomorrow. It has been a great sunny day just what we needed for one of his walks.
RIP KAISER 11/6/2011----31/5/2014 .... Tom ....

Very sad Tom but you have given him a great life since you had him and his last few weeks have been Doggie heaven anyway with many dogs never getting to do as he has been able .

Oh Tom we are so sorry to hear about Kaiser but you made the right decision for him without thinking about yourself. love and kisses Gina, Ron sends his regards.
IF IT SHOULD BE
If it should be that I grow weak And pain should keep me from my sleep, Then you must do what must be done, For this last battle cannot be won.
You will be sad, I understand, Don´t let your grief then stay your hand, For this day, more than all the rest, Your love for me must stand the test.
We´ve had so many happy years, What is to come can hold no fears, You´d not want me to suffer so, The time has come - please let me go.
Take me where my need they´ll tend, And please stay with me till the end, Hold me firm and speak to me, Until my eyes no longer see. I know in time that you will see, The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved, from pain and suffering I´ve been saved, Please do not grieve - it must be you, Who had this painful thing to do. We´ve been so close, we two, these years; Don´t let your heart hold back its tears.

Dear Tom and Josie,
Jim and I are so saddened to hear that Kaiser has passed on to the Rainbow Bridge. Kaiser had a kind and loving home with you, something that too many animals never experience. You did the best for him in his too short life. We are here for you should you feel the need, thinking of you and sending you love and healing. Rossi and Jim x

Such sad news Tom. But he died leading a happy life with all those exciting new walks and smells.
If you do catch up with the tour, I am sure it will help take your mind off it, but in any case you'll know you did all you could for him and that's what matters.

Such sad news Tom, it's brought tears to my eyes as I know how hard it is to lose a companion and I really feel for you. So glad I have a happy memory of Rigg and Kaiser romping round together and just enjoying being happy dogs at Hardraw last year and I hope that similar happy memories of your time with Kaiser will bring you comfort although it's perhaps too soon and raw at the moment.
Thinking of you xx

Very sorry to read this.
Remember, it's quality of life which counts, not quantity and it sounds as though Kaiser had a great life right up to the end.

Oh Tom, that's such sad news. Kaiser was such a gorgeous dog and a great character. Martin and I both know how hard it is to lose a dog who's been such a good mate and part of the family. Might not feel like it now but one day you'll be able to really enjoy looking back and talking about all the trips you both did with Kaiser. Thinking of you both xx

Oh Tom, I'm so sorry. Wish I was there to give you a big hug. You don't need us to tell you what a good life he's had with you and sounds like he had the best doggy holiday ever. Try and rejoin the trip. You'll cheer up and if you don't everyone will understand and just be there for you. He was a handsome dog! Thinking of you xx

Mr Stonedaddy how sad for you, but what a life young Kaiser had all that wildcamping and long walks and near the end running round the Scottish hills. Love is knowing when to let go and being with them while they do.

Sorry this has happened to such a seemingly healthy athletic dog, Tom. Used to enjoy our walks with him even tho he didn't always behave himself! Died young and lived fast - gone to the great 'meet' in the sky, I think.
Hope we see you soon.

Thanks to everyone for there support it has truly brought more tears to my eyes so I feel like I am drowning in emotion. I have decided to carry on to Ullapool later in the day and take things from there. Each morning I wake up it feels like my right arm is missing. The quietness is eerie as the first thing what happens is I am shouting at him for some misdemeanour's or naughtiness. I am going to put a post up at the WC forum for those that knew him. I will then move on after my 4 night stay here before they start charging me rent. I have to pass the vets on my way up north so I will give Kaiser a couple of toots on the horn to wish him Bon-voyage on his last walk to the other side. .... Tom ....

Hi Tom
Sorry to hear of your news, crying, empty ? its only because we care.
I lost my Holly in France, they never prepare you at school to explain that your dog has cancer and the end has arrived. That does test ones linguistic skills.
I think I cried each day for 3 months, I still miss her, they become part of your life, people that dont have dogs never truly understand. They embarrass you, cause mischief, and repeat it !!!...yet they are honest in their appreciation of us being part of the pack.
It is obvious from others comments you are a dog man. I really understand your emotions.
Dogs are for life , yes, but the hardesty part is letting go.
what can I say ?
Channa
