Ok so i have a map on my iPad as that was main point of reference for travelling about Europe. On it i have every single place i stayed over the last 2 years. I didn't pay for camping and i only had one bad experience but that wasn't due to location more wrong time wrong place! Would recommend Maps with me on iPad for travelling as you can download individual countries and then no need for sat nav. Also easy to spot good places to stop and you have the added bonus of having a log of your adventure

I still have my sat nav which I love...it has lots of POIs on it of wild spots, aires, stellenplatzen.
On my android phone, I View Ranger (free) for which I can either download free OpenStreet maps (I download them via my computer rather than use my phone's data allowance). I don't use Google maps because they don't allow me to store enough maps for offline use. Or I can download Ordnance Survey maps (for a small charge) or their equivalent in some other countries, if I want something more detailed for rambling.
It is probably my favourite app on my fone
