Our stream could easily power something like this. It would have to be more discreet but I think we could be interested in a smaller version.

A smaller version could be an old car alternator attached to the paddle wheel giving 12v direct, although transmission losses would be a problem at that voltage.

Great idea, imo!
I always find that generating electrical power is the relatively easy bit. 'Tis all the adaptation and application problems that defeat me. My efforts using just dc batteries haven't been a roaring success. And those alternators can near kill you with the kick, if, like me, ye don't know what ye're playing with!
Btw, totally off-topic, but while
in getting roofing- sheet nails, I met a guy buying an awful heavy roll of wire, even though it didn't look heavy enough guage for fencing ( he looked like a farmer). What his project was came as quite a surprise: he was going to attach chicken wire to straw bales.
I immediately thought he was going to render ( cement over) a straw-bale house, but he said it was for a cellar. Slow on the uptake, I asked wouldn't it get wet. He said no, as the "cellar" was a wine storage cellar that would be clad on the outside just like a shed or building. With the rendered straw walls inside, it would have great insulation and keep an ideal uniform temperature for the wine.
Great idea if ye're rich and have the space, plus the vinyard, of course!

I seem to recall alternators need to spin at 1000rpm min to generate power.and the more power they generate, the harder they are to turn.

I think you could get 500-1000 rpm from a decent stream like Karen's. I know people have used alternators in wind turbines effectively. You probably wouldn't get full output but a trickle charge of 1 or 2 amps would be nice and enough to keep a battery charge since it is going all the time from the stream.
