St Davids Day Severn Bore Meet 1st March I 've Arranged a Free meet at the White Hart Broadoak on the Banks of the River Severn near Newnham on St Davids day March 1st. The meet will coincide with the biggest Bore of the year of 10.3 on the River severn. This is something I've been wanting to see for some years and I believe this is the biggest in the U.K. The Severn Bore in 2014 promises to be a record breaker after years of dissapointment, don’t miss out on the natural wonder and sporting spectacular which draws thousands of visitors to Gloucestershire every year I've just spoken to the pub and ordered Speckled hen and IPA in a large quantity so don't let me down. They have arranged entertainment on the Friday night which sounds excellent starting at 7.30 til 10.30 The bore is early in the morning so they will open the pub and breakfast rolls and Coffee will be on sale. I really like their positive and helpful attitude towards us. 51.813921,-2.438493 www.thewhitehartbroadoak.co.uk/The Bore is visible from the pub grounds, and possibly from inside depending on your position and the light, and the amount of people standing outside. The best view is outside on our balcony. Since the flood defences were built (over 35 years ago)they have not yet failed in protecting the car parks, Obviously usage of the car park is at the risk of vehicle owners! Water is available from an outside tap next to the kitchen entrance. There isn't any purpose built manholes specifically designed for Camper purposes, however there are several manhole covers which can be removed for waste disposal. the pub currently opens: Weds Thurs, Fri 12-3 6-11pm Sat 12-11pm Sunday 12-6pm closed Monday and Tuesday. However we could possibly tailor our opening hours to suit if required! Dogs are more than welcome in the main Bar area of the pub. The arrival times are fine with us. Toilets are accessible during pub opening times,(earlier may be possible) The bus stop to Gloucester is about 100yds from the pub. Recently we currently stock only one real ale Golden Hen, as it is quiet at this time of year, but if you guys are real ale drinkers I dare say we can increase that if you will drink more ale! Please note we are a greeneking tied pub! No fires. Daffodils to be worn on St Davids day or you pay a fine. Please note we are not staying in the main car park but in the overflow car park to the right of the pub looking out toward the river.

That's a great weekend for Bores with a 3* on Saturday, 4* on Sunday and 5* on Monday. IMO, by far the best place for viewing is actually on the riverbank at Minsterworth but you'd need to arrive early to get a good spot. I can't do weekends but I am hoping to get along to Monday's Bore. I saw the 5* in 2010 but the 4* of 2011 were better and definitely worth camping out in -14 deg to watch (even though I nearly missed it because my van hinges froze up and I couldn't open the doors!). 2011 Bore: youtu.be/QNo_ZX3sB9k

If the guys are up early they can always drive up further to see. They're saying this year could be a really good year.

The bores are 3, 4 and 5-stars so should be quite impressive, particularly at Newnham. The 4-star earlier this month at Minsterworth was barely discernible though due to the height of the river following all the rain.

how many of us are going to this one as there is no list on here I'm going to at least one of the Bores, starting at Newnham then dashing up to Minsterworth where I hope there'll be more of a splash than the last bore. Monday's 5* should be good if the river level is lower now.

I never quite worked out what all the fuss was about the Severn Bore! Yes it's a tidal wave on a river, but you can see much bigger waves on the coast, if waves are one's thing

I always go, several times per year and enjoy it. A night's camping and a great atmosphere too - I wouldn't miss it, especially the 5* bores!

Probably like visiting Lands end once was enough! lol

I may well do, thank you, and had been thinking about it. My plans aren't finalised yet but I'd like to see Sunday's and Monday's bores both at Newnham and Minsterworth. I think there'll be a scram to get to both, especially on Monday if this springlike weather continues. Surfers travel from all over the world for the 5* bores and the area is usually packed solid. I'll be working on our land throughout the weekend (clearing brambles, planting willow, hedging, fitting bird boxes - lots to do) then head home at dusk, but this can fit around the bores. Might there be space near the exit for a tiny van to arrive late on Saturday night? No problem if not - I'm local and wouldn't want to take a space from someone who has to travel a longer distance.

Never the less, wish I was coming. I'll be on the east coast instead. I'm planning to film it again, both at Newnham and Minsterworth, on Sunday and Monday, so you can still 'see' it a little later! MTM: I'm working on our land on Saturday until dusk and by the time I've been home, fed/cleaned the buns and had a meal, I doubt I'll be leaving home much before 10 so should arrive at Newnham around 11'ish. My van is only tiny and will squeeze into wherever there is space, hopefully near the exit so I can leave to join the mad rush to Minsterworth immediately the Bore has passed. Look forward to meeting some new faces

The bore runs from Newnham where the river is quite wide upriver through Minsterworth where it narrows giving a much larger bore, depending on the river level. The bore at Minsterworth is usually much more impressive than Newnham.
There's just about time to catch it at both locations but parking can be tricky as most viewers and many surfers join the dash to get a parking spot.
