A few of us are giving this a try at the moment. Thanks to @wvw for finding it!

As you may know platforms like Facebook and this one mean your data is available for everyone to see including Government, Councils, Police etc if they request access and manipulate FB.
Whereas Retroshare means data stored is not on a centralised server, yet groups of trusted people can still have access. It's what you may use in a country like Syria or Russia where you want to swap information with friends but you don't want a knock on your door from the Gov Police if your political views are not in line with the norm. Increasingly, you may find that will be appropriate to this country too as the Govs catch up with technology, seek to use the internet more and more for their own purposes.
It offers PGP sign up certificates and OpenSSL encryption - basically that means it's impossible from anyone outside to break in to your communications or groups.
Don't expect anything like Facebook. This is more basic like Messenger or Skype. But it does offer forums and channels and I think stuff like sharing photos, files, galleries etc.
At the moment we are just trying it out but if you want to have a go too, send me a PM and we can swap emails.
You will need to install the client, and then we will need to swap PGP certificates to add each other. It's a little more tricky than FB initially but hopefully it wont be too difficult to use.
