Last year a few of us from a couple of other forums all met up at Ribblehead for New Year. Despite the constant sideways rain for 3 days +, we had a great time. The Station Inn was a lifeline due to the weather and they do bar meals as well as a sit down meal. There was live music from a local folk band last year and fireworks at midnight. Parking is available in the pub car park, but as a courtesy, people are requested to ask the landlord in case anything has changed since last year. There is also parking adjacent to the quarry, directly opposite the rail station, just the other side of the railway line. At Helwith Bridge, about 5 miles from Ribblehead, there is a picnic area with space for about a dozen vans. However, I would suggest speaking to the landlord at the pub, as there was a suggestion on another forum that there was some concern that the residents were not happy about vans parking overnight in the picnic area. I know Firefox is planning to be in the area for NY and although I'm not committing for definite (Little Miss Noncommital ) there's a good chance I'll be down that way, either Helwith or Ribblehead. I'll keep this thread updated on the who / what/ when / where etc but it would be good if people could indicate if they are coming along so that we can give the pub(s) a rough idea of what kind of numbers they can expect, especially if people are planning to eat in the pub.

I will probably be a bit at both places.
Motorhoming-Wild are going to be at Helwith bridge. I'm not sure how many it's just a small meet I think. Also LotusAnne and I think Carol too are coming. That other forum were a bit pee'd off last summer with the Station Inn at Ribblehead as they double booked a folk night with their Kareoke. But I've no problems going there.
I may also climb Ingelborough if anyone fancies it. I've already done Whernside and Pen-Y-Ghent this year so that will complete the set.
There's very good walking locally and both the Helwith Bridge Pub and the Station Inn are dog friendly.

Station Inn was cracking last year . The landlady made space for the dogs in front of the fire and even provided towells when wet cold dogs were brought in ! Good food too.

I thought i posted in here earlier... mustn't have save it..?! Anyway, am up for New Year, and don't mind which venue. LIke the sound of the landlady looking out for dogs Basildog (nice to see you posting again btw!) I also am up for climbing Ingleborough FF though back at work on 2nd Jan so time might be tight, when do you think you will get there?

I'm going to Basildog's bash at Avebury on the 29th. So will travel up on the 30th. If I set off early morning it will take me about 4 hours from Stonehenge so should be there sometime on the 30th. Then I may stay till the 2nd and see my family in Stockport on the 3rd, but I don't have to be back to Herts till the 5th. Ingleborough is weather dependent but otherwise we can just walk at low level down round by the viaduct if it's not too bad (like it was last year, it bucketed down).

So we could either do it on New Years Eve or New Years day (hangover permitting!) Don't mind if its raining, but not keen if its icey and slippy.. but sure we can do something.. sounds good!!

Yes misty is bad too as it can get confusing up there but is plenty of good walking down by the viaduct or at Helwith round the woods, river, and quarry which is not too taxing and nice for Mia too.

Sounds like a plan. Will probably go to Helwith first and then to Ribblehead or may stay at Helwith. You can always text (07941) 172 043 though the signal is crap down that valley. May be able to get internet in the pub at Ribblehead.

I will be at Helwith to catch up with the Motorhoming Wild crew. Would be good to see some of the characters from this site that I have not already met. Or even the ones that I have already met

Sounds like quite a bit of interest in this, both the suggested venues sound good, I have only been to Riibblehead and stayed in the quarry which is fine and only 2mins away from the pub, good dog walking behind oub. But happy to check out Helwith and meet up with the Motorhoming wild people too, as well as members from this site

last time i was there I met this bunch of hippies, LOL Ha ha, and just who are you referring to there, BigB? I seem to remember you couldn't take the pace and disappeared off early the morning after I arrived... I think you just came to show off your mean machine and realised that no-one was really impressed, we were just humouring you.... The van on the left hand side of the photo is Firefox, and my BWV with ladder on rear and roof rack, is on the right hand side of the blue van. Not sure who the character in the pic is, will need to zoom in on the picture to see it better. In reply to Lotusanne, yes that is the quarry car park on the other side of the railway line, directly opposite the station building, about 300 m up a track from the main road, the turning to the track is on the right hand side on the opposite side of the road to the pub, it's about 12 foot before the bridge, if you are approaching from Ingleton. There's space for about a dozen vans if people park thoughtfully. There is alternative parking under the viaduct itself, about 300 m along a track behind the pub, I think there's a no camping sign but it didn't seem to stop people. And I can't see there being any problems for a few days over NY.

I'll be around in the area, subject to having enough £££ and no van probs! Will probably spend time both at RH and at Helwith and also got a couple of other nice locations nearby up my sleeve I know the area very well, spent alot of time working as an outdoor instructor taking groups of kids walking and climbing in the Dales, and have done alot of personal walking and climbing there too, and used to go wild camping round there when I had my 2CV - I would either sleep in a goretex bivvy bag underneath it, or put up the flysheet of my tent and sleep in bivvi bag in that or take the back seat out and sleep in the back of the 2CV, depending on the weather and location. I still love going back as now so many places have so many memories for me, especially some lovely days out on the hill with my first dog (he went 4 years ago but is still much missed and I had as strong a bond with him as I do with RTP - it was just the 2 of us, and we had so many great adventures together). Other than a visit to my mum over Christmas / Boxing Day, I have no definite plans until week beg 7 Jan so planning at least a week away in the van. Yorks Dales is only about 30 - 40 miles for me so shouldn't cost too much to have a week+ on the road but will need to keep moving every day or 2 to keep battery charged and keep the damp out of the van, so will probably do quite a bit of touring round. I'm looking forward to seeing folk, it's been a bit of a quiet and miserable month since I got the BWV back from MOT because I've been so skint from the shock horror bill (£1300) which wiped out all my savings and spare cash, plus tax plus insurance, and waiting for unpaid wages from work done in the summer. But finances are beginning to recover a bit now, and I'm stocked up on some lovely wines from the Lindisfarne Wine Company after my Northumberland trip in Sept. And I might aswell be cold in the van as cold at home! It'll be good to finally put some names to faces too, although I'm a little nervous about meeting people and don't find it easy in busy pubs or large groups of people. I do hope we have some half decent weather, even if it rains a little, so long as it doesn't rain constantly for days on end, I'll be happy.

Great!! You sound the perfect person to meet up with as you know area so well... and lots of other reasons of course!! Are you coming up Ingleborough on New Years eve? I think we will be arriving on Sun 30th staying at Helwith that night and at Ribblehead on 31st... but subject to change, FF advised Ribblehead best starting point for walk, so could spend both nights there. Really looking forward to break too, has been very stressful year for me too, mostly to do with work and other peoples health worries, and just not enough free time, so very happy to be off now for nearly two weeks. Look forward to meeting up

Not sure about an Ingleborough walk, I've not been in the best of health physically for the past few months, and I've "done" Ingleborough countless times in the past. If the weather is good, I may do it but don't really want to do it if the weather is bad, have done it so many times in cloud and /or rain. Just make sure you take a map and compass though, and make sure you take a bearing for the path down off the summit if visibility is poor, as it's very easy to miss the path down as the summit is so big and in cloud, it's very easy to become disorientated, and there are a couple of routes off, and you don't want to end up in Horton by mistake! Speaking from experience here.... although I didn't actually get too far down the Horton path before realising my mistake, luckily! Also take a bearing from where the steep route up the last part of Ingleborough (the route goes directly behind the pub in Chapel le Dale, I forget what it's called, and straight up some steep contours) meets the path coming up from Horton before the last short climb up onto the top, that's often where people go wrong in poor visibility as there's also a 3rd path which meets there which follows the ridge line of Ingleborough down a gentler route and which will bring you back down close to Ribblehead.
Where I stay on the 31st very much depends on where there are going to be fireworks as Rigg has become very noise shy about fireworks over the last year or 2 (vet says its age related) and I'd rather not be close to fireworks. So I may be at the RH pub but not parked in the quarry, I might move under the viaduct further away from fireworks.
But I'll catch up with you for definite at some point. Firefox has my mobile number.
I'm also thinking of taking the train to Skipton for an afternoon, as I haven't been to Skipton for ages, and it's a nice ride, and the dog can come on the train, and Skipton has a good market so company for that is welcome. Don't know which day it would be though. Just whenever I find myself close to a station with a free afternoon!

Thanks WVW all very useful. Firefox, hope you are taking note - both me amd Martin have no sense of direction atall, and it sounds quite easy to go wrong! I agree with you about fireworks, WVW, Mia is terrified of them, having have a bad shock a couple of years ago on new years eve, when she shook for literally hours, so I want to be really careful with her. Well we can keeps plans to meet up fluid.. mine usually are anyway, tend to have a plan a, b and c and confuse everyone with them! hopefully it will happen at some point

Yes, will only do Ingleborough if weather is OK. Otherwise there is some good walking down in the valley. Can always walk up to the train tunnel and beyond - it is easy going and not too strenuous or likely to be too misty at that level, unless the weather is a real pig, in which case it is pub/campfire time anyway. I'll bring the southern frosties firepit so we should be nice and warm in that respect!

Yes you can book for me thanks Though they did have plenty of space last year, it was all a bit disorganised. They said they had "lost all the bookings" but just go in anyway. It may be different this year.
