I've been using Navfree satnav app on my iPhone .Its really quite good for a free app,and has now had an upgrade to include google street view. This makes it possible to look at potential wilding sites on your phone and toucan also save your favourite locations in street view .Speed camera locations can be added for 59p. This app works really well, but does use quite a lot of battery.

That's a good idea.
Another app I find brilliant is View Ranger, a free app.
You can use it instead of a Garmin for walks and hikes. You can use Ordnance Survey maps at 1:50,000 and 1:25,000. You can download tiles (you don't need to download the whole map) as you need them for 10p and 60p respectively. If you don't have a signal (as you might not at the top of a mountain), you can download tiles before your walk.
If you are really tightfisted, you can used Open Street Maps (the cyclist one is best for walking) for free. Not as detailed as OS, but I find most of the footpaths are marked. (And you can always contribute to Open Street Maps by uploading your tracks). Again download them as you need them. If you want to preload them, you can use a PC application called MOBAC to download them to your laptop and transfer them to your phone for later use.
You can also record your track so, even if you don't have the right maps, you can always find your way back to your van.
Brilliant app - I use it five or six times a week.

I've just downloaded the Proboards app that WVW mentioned and am well pleased; it's easier than accessing the forum through a browser and fast also.

itunes.apple.com/gb/app/icampsites-campsites.../id360405766?mt=8 iCampsites allows you to quickly and easily locate campsites throughout the UK & Europe either by vicinity to your current location. This app is probably my most useful resource both in planning and out on the road which I've downloaded for phone & ipad. I don't think that it does itself any favours by marketing as a camping site & caravan park finder as it shows thousands of locations & descriptions of Motorhome parking, Wildcamping Locations, Aires, Stellplatz, France Passion etc in addition to campsites. It's paid for itself time after time. Also available for android.

Take a look at Back Country Navigator for Android in Google Play store. Not sure about I phones. I find it useful in the UK because you can use Multimap UK OS Explorer, which gives access to the UK ordanance survey maps. The big advantage is the ability to download a section of map to your phones SD card or memory, which can then be used offline, when there is no signal.
Away from the UK, I use the Open Street Cycle Map, and using the ability to cache sections of maps, with a bit of forward planning you can download some or all of your destinations in Europe. The maps can then be accessed without using data. I used Open Cycle Map on a recent trip to Holland and Germany, and it shows very clearly the cycleways in both these countries.
