A Fascinating video from 1960 before the term "hippy" was coined. Watch it the whole way through. Do you think attitudes like those of the council still remain or will return? After all some of us "just like to travel and play our music still....even go a few days without washing! Those youngsters will be in their seventies now, I wonder if they ever settled down to become model citizens. www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=W3WfXA9JL9w

when I was a longhaired ne'er do well in the late 60's [ I know, hard to believe when you see the smart, perfectly groomed person I am today!]I was often refused service in pubs and cafes, walking down the high street brought on this weird noise, hundreds of old ladies all tutting !got punched a few times, just in passing, and learnt something about human nature.the middle classes would complain, and ex squaddies would cross the road to wish you well ! a common dopey remark was''it's disgusting ! you can't tell the boys from the girls !'' to which i'd reply ,don't worry,we can !

I couldn't get Monty Python sketches out of my head! I remember Cliff Michelmore and Alan Whicker, but I had completely forgotten their accents, dear lord!!

The irony of it all is that these youngsters were the vanguard of the hippy surf culture that really put Newquay on the map as a major tourist venue eventually bringing in millions of pounds every year. The result of which is a town whose population is swelled by four fold in July and August by arrogant, pissed louts of both sexes creating an intimidating atmosphere for locals and other tourists alike.....but they have money to spend so the council does nothing to send them packing. I expect tis because they manage to shower once a day.
