Just started viewing this site using PC, (been using an ipad thus far with no problem) web page still being loaded but constantly getting warning tab from installed McAfee programme blocking off intrusions. Do you have the same problem viewing pages via your PC ??

McAfee is full of bugs. Same with Norton AV. You will get all sorts of false warnings and notifications of threats where they don't exist. There are no threats or intrusions on this board; it's the most common and respected forum software on the Internet. In fact there is more personal security here than elsewhere. Whereas on other boards admins can get into your account to read private messages and passwords etc.
I have also had the situation in the past where programs such as McAfee and Norton AV have blocked people's emails, stopping them from receiving any email at all, and also compromised other aspects of their computer. If you want a good (free) anti virus use AVG or Avast.

I agree with Vernon. I gave up on both Norton and McAfee more than a decade ago. Both created many ongoing problems for me, with false positives.
Since then, I used AVG free, but that got very controlling and cheeky, too, with toolbar installation.
I current use Avast free which can be a bit aggressive, but less so than some others. Avast is not giving me any problems on the forum.

This is so interesting as I have a new computer and can't get anywhere with it! For years I've heard what folk say above: " Norton and McAfee are no good".
However, as I haven't a clue what I'm doing, I'm loath to uninstall them yet. On the other hand, if those who know about these things say this would be a good idea, I'll do it.
I have other things in place. At the moment, i cannot get youtube to work and have only just managed to get betfair ( gambling site) in a usable format.
A deep check with Malwarebytes showed over a hundred infections - all from the pre-loaded stuff! ( Windows8). To say that I'm not impressed is putting it mildly. Only had the thing three days.
Anyway, unless I hear to the contrary, Norton and McAfee will be taken out tomorrow.

Well so long as you are reasonably confident installing things and removing others. Most of it is pretty automatic nowadays anyway - nowhere near as bad as it used to be.
If you do add new stuff though be careful about downloading extra stuff like toolbars and letting it change your home page or search engines.
The other thing you may find that certain preloaded software while not exactly "harmful" can be listed as malware or an infection by some checking agents. This may be on account of it taking up unnecessary space, slowing down your machine, or trying to get you to update it frequently again consuming resources you may want for your own programmes.

Thanks, Firefox.
I'll be brave and take the risk. Speed and ease of use with the limited amount of things that i do on computer is my only concern.
I have already deleted about thirty "apps" even though i have no idea what they are.
Not too impressed with this "chimes " idea , either, and i hate not being able to find "start" or "run" quickly.

Yes, Windows 8 is a little different.
I have just had a few goes on 8 ... still using XP here and Windows 7 at home. Only just got rid of W2000 NT at work because the machine crashed.
Just as we get used to one system they hit us with the next one!

Another rule of thumb is avoid having more than one anti virus running...they can interfere with each other. I don't mean in a sexual way, just that they bump into each other and do odd things.

Yep, I'm pretty sure a lot of the aggro I get is down to a clash of the viruses!
This Windows 8 thing was forced on me by the daughter and her husband who know everything ( well, almost, they're not on wc4m yet).
At present, now that she's gone back to France ( they're moving to Zurich, Switzerland next), I actually still use the old XP horrendous big PC box yoke. At least, I can get a small bit of sense out of that.
On the new thing, my attempt to purge it of Norton and McAfee has mostly succeeded, bar a persistent little divil from Norton, that refuses to go peacefully.
Using google chrome, i can play some youtube things but not others. On Seamonkey I can send myself an old youtube link by e-mail from the old prehistoric to the hateful new gleaming machine. This then plays for a maximum of two times. It then goes all snowy, like the old fifties TVs, and tells me that I need to install Flash adobe or something. Seamonkey then flashes me, saying that it will not allow this to come to pass under any circumstance. Result? Stalemate and gridlock. Hence, back the the old but usable prehistoric.
Ho hum, dee , dum.

Just a note to say that I uninstalled Norton and McAfee as best I could and already things seem a lot better. At present, I'm flat out trying to remove unnecessary start-ups.
Not sure how well I'm doing but things do seem a lot better.
Btw, does anybody know a simple way to get straight to Desktop without all the logging-in and other time-wasting rubbish?
Forgot to mention that Adblocker seems to be doing a fine job.

And one thing I did that was completely wrong, apparently, was to bin "Spotify".
I don't really know what it is but I'm told by folk in the music business that this thing is the beesknees when it comes playing recorded music.
So a bad mistake caused by ignorance on my part.
