Should we collect some money at meets?
And if so spend it on what?
Please post other suggestions or comments and say if you would be prepared to act as treasurer in charge of the funds, collections, and purchases...

Sorry. I have no income to speak of so I wouldn't be able to contribute anything and will have to abstain from any voting. My camping budget is restricted to fuel only with no extras at all.
Re a marquee - I'm not sure this is very appropriate for discreet wildcamping??!!!

I wouldn't object to contributing to a fund but as usual it's not that simple! If it did happen I'm prepared to act as treasurer. I could do with a holiday! Seriously though if we think the forum has a long future ahead it would be useful to have some communal items but who would take responsibility for storage etc?

Re a marquee - I'm not sure this is very appropriate for discreet wildcamping??!!! No it wouldn't, but not all meets are discreet wildcamping. Some would be at pubs with a field etc or even places like Radwell campsite (£4 a night) where a marquee could be useful. I agree Billie, that storage/usage is a potential for some tears and whinging: eg I paid £9 so far and I haven't used the Marquee yet! I paid £6 but I never went to the Xmas party, I want my money back! So we'd have to keep records and be fairly transparent and sympathetic. There will be problems, but no pain, no gain.

Don't think that the option of money going to the woodland purchase should be there. Not everyone would be able to benefit and the money collected would be a drop in the ocean. Much better to aim for achievable items like a small marquee, decent fire pit etc.

Woodland purchase - I was more thinking about expenses such as legal costs/telephone/postage rather than the actual purchase itself - but we'd have to set ground rules for anyone who contributed that they didn't mind the money being used for any of the following...blah, blah... or maybe they want their contribution ringfenced for one thing or the other. That's why we'd need to keep some kind of record in a notebook of who and how much and for what, and accounts of what we'd bought and when. I can see it being fraught with all kinds of difficulties and arguments if we are not very careful, but just thought I'd float it to see what the general feeling was

i just think tis post shoupld be removed as we are just a bunch of freinds who occansial meet up and if if we need something like fire pirt then it wais sorted out without a lot of discussion as regard the woodland that should be between members who are intreested and will make use of it

Clearly there will be those on limited budgets who wont be able to pay, and those who won't want to contribute to various things like woodland so it won't work directly in this form, as you correctly suggest. But if, for example, 60% of the members were concerned we had public liability insurance and would be prepared to pay for it, then it might steer us to investigate that issue more, if you can see how it may be useful to get a rough idea of people's feelings.

I am not expressing any particular view about the direction that the group should head in, but I am starting to think that it would be a good idea for the group to hammer some things out about how they see the group going, or rather where.
To potential new members, FMUK is at first sight just another motorhoming forum/group.
There is a long term serious conversation about acquiring woodland and looking at what and what might not be permitted under this or that regulation, and we need this or that certificate or insurance. Now we are examining the collection of and handling of money for maybe this or that purpose. And thinking about that is going to sit with what will be de facto different tiers of membership. And what happens to group assets if it breaks up?
This is grown up stuff, isn't it?
I am thinking that maybe we need to get this right from the get go. Formal memorandum of association, mission statement, trustees, election?

You really are deluded or are trying to delude others. Why would you expect anyone on here to pay legal fees for something they are very very unlikely to see or use, even in the very distant future. 2 or 3 pounds per head per meet, given that all said members at the meet agree with this pie in the forest in the first place, is going to pay for what exactly?? A solicitor's letter perhaps?? I think that if the woodland project proceeds as a group purchase then there will be a sub-group formed and the woodland will belong to those individuals, not under the umbrella of FMHUK. There would need to be a very carefully drawn-up contract regarding shares, ownership, permissions, maintenance agreements, how much camping is allowed and how shares would be re-sold if necessary in the future etc to ensure all partners gain benefit from it. I can probably arrange some legal advice should this proceed. I see it as completely separate from any marquee, firepit purchases etc and it sounds as though only a small number of members are interested in this partnership anyway.

I think I agree with RubberTramp and Old Hippy, it seems a lot of hassle to start collectig money and keepimg account of it. If and when a need arises for something no one has or can borrow then we could have an informal whip round, eg a firepit or awning as mentioned . Unless there's a needI am not aware of - I havent proprly digested all the threads about public liability// cert etc yet . But generally think it is easier to keep things simple

One of our members suggested in another thread we collect money at meets and spend it on things (such as) public liability insurance, like other forums do. It's not my idea, but no harm in floating it to see what others think.
So all we're doing is giving people the chance express their opinions on that, or if they don't want to spend it on insurance, what do they want to spend it on, or if they don't want to collect money on a formal basis they've got that option too.

No harm in throwing things in the pot for debate, better than ignoring people's suggestions or imposing one persons ideas. Personally I think its a small forum and we are in early days , don't knwo where it will go yet, and that Vernon has done a great job in setting it all up for free and trying to encourage people to get involved. People normally come on forums to have a chat, bit of banter, forum for asking questions getting advice etc, which is ostly what this forum is about. I am not sure what your agenda is Derek, I don't think I know you or have met you, but you are coming across as very hostile and possibly bringing in some old grudges?

Then why o why include it in the poll Karen?? [/quote] I was offering an opinion on how I personally would see the woodland project progressing should it proceed. I would see it as being a projects amongst owners as partners, not FMHUK. Land purchase is potentially a very long-term commitment which is likely to outlive any forum.

I have voted 'yes' other. Since this is a social group forum I think we should maybe look to others who may be having a bad time at the moment. Maybe they just can't afford to go to a meet for one reason or another, so a free trip out would bring a fellow member into the 'get together' when perhaps they need it most, but cannot afford the costs involved ie; fuel, food, drink etc:. Nominations for the person or persons could be adjudicated by the moderators. By this action we support our fellow motorhomers and get to meet more members than we would otherwise.

I voted against, but am more than happy to accept any donations towards Brown's beer fund.ta in advance Yes, it doesn't look like we will be doing this as most people don't care for it. If we ever need to get something we could maybe do it on a one off basis, like bring prizes and have a raffle, sweepstakes, or boot sale or something.

Re a marquee - I'm not sure this is very appropriate for discreet wildcamping??!!! If we had a rally exemption certificate there would be no need for descreet wild camping meets I have 10 acre rally field with water, waste dump WC and a 9mtr x 6mtr Marquee, (plus cider/apple wine etc) but hey ho no one fancies it.

Yes, I'd quite like to pay a visit sometime, Wildman. It would only be for up to 5 vans, and subject to space being available, but perhaps RT or OH could come, they are localish and if Mini came it could be called a "mini-meet"
