I agree with OH, get an external one, as big as poss.
I got 3 external HDDs, - 1TB external HDD for the TV, which is partioned and one partition is used as a backup for everything else (laptops, mobile, and the other 2 HDDs) - 1TB external HDD for all docs, photos, music, vids, tv progs etc which I take away with me in the van so that I got everything I need with me and can use it on other machines too - 120GB external HDD which was the first external HDD I bought a few years ago and which is nearly full now and quite old - this is the one I use on a day to day basis and carry round with me when out, it's autobacked up to the 1TB HDDs whenever they are all plugged in, because it is old now and I'm a little worried it might suddenly go kaput.
I've lost so much stuff over the years that I now back up everything, ideally in 2 other locations, so I now also have important docs which I might need to access in emergency both on the 120Gb HDD as well as online storage in Dropbox.
One of the 1TB HDDs was from Aldi and I had a problem with it (the lead went bang!) so I had to send it back for repairs which made me realise that I hadn't backed it up and so I was anxious in case I lost everything on it.
That's why I bought the second 1TB HDD, so that I have a complete back up of everything, just in case.
The other 1TB HDD and the 120GB HDD are both from Amazon, made by Buffalo, and have been excellent, no probs at all, and they include various useful free software for syncing, backing up etc.
I can definitely recommend Dropbox, I use it loads - if you want to sign up, let me know as I'll send you my link to it so I will get extra storage for introducing a friend. There's other free online storage available but you can use Dropbox on any computer or android mobile and it auto-syncs folders etc.
I have a big (oldish) laptop which sometimes makes strange noises so I'm being very good about backing up every couple of days at the moment, in case it dies. I also have a new small net book. Depending on how long I'm away for I might take either of the laptops away with me in the van and so I don't have any personal info stored on them in case of theft etc. The only security risk is that I'd be logged into various websites but being on android, I can manually log out of websites / change passwords etc immediately by mobile phone if necessary.
Everything is stored on the external HDDs which are password encrypted so that if I lose them, they can't be accessed (hopefully).
I also have a couple of 8gb usb sticks, one for photos, one for music, so that it's easy to swop photos, music, etc with other people, or to use these with other machines eg car stereo, digi photo frames etc.
I've got a couple of USB sticks with special photos etc on it stored in a fireproof safe box at home, with passport, and other important / v special things. It's fixed to the floor, and has a sturdy lock. The fireproof box didn't cost much, about £25 a few years ago I think, and is good peace of mind when I'm away from home.

It is usually easy enough, but it depends on lots things, usually based around age of your equipment. Er, your computer equipment.
I would go for an external which dead easy, which is what I do now for my back drive.

what to do is get three hotmail accounts and three sky drives online storage and back once a month to them so three acounts let call them a ,b ,c so month 1 back up to A month 2 back up to B month 3 back up to C month 4 back up to A and so on this covers all bases just think if you lost backup hdd at least you have online copy and it doesnt take long once you get used to it and can do it as often as you need to back up just make folder and call it the month you are doing on the sky drive

disk storage table
· 1 Bit = Binary Digit · 8 Bits = 1 Byte · 1000 Bytes = 1 Kilobyte · 1000 Kilobytes = 1 Megabyte · 1000 Megabytes = 1 Gigabyte · 1000 Gigabytes = 1 Terabyte · 1000 Terabytes = 1 Petabyte · 1000 Petabytes = 1 Exabyte · 1000 Exabytes = 1 Zettabyte · 1000 Zettabytes = 1 Yottabyte · 1000 Yottabytes = 1 Brontobyte · 1000 Brontobytes = 1 Geopbyte
