Hi, my speedo isn't working right, it says you are going much faster than you are. Does this also mean that it will be clocking up extra miles on the clock? Does anyone know ? Thanks

Stop you getting a speeding ticket :-). I think most speedometers are out ,i tend to use satnav for checking speed and last 2 vans have been a bit over the satnav. Not sure how much extra mileage you would clock up

Thanks Rebbyvid, yes that's exactly what I do, but it is way out, can be saying doing 90 on the clock and only 50 on satnav. The reason I ask is coast I have a restriction on my insurance if only 3000 miles per year, if you go over it costs a fortune

Not sure how much extra mileage you would clock up i am led to believe they are 10% out so if your doing 77-78 mph you should be bang on 70 disconnect it at the gearbox or where ever it reads from....... use your sat nav or phone app as your speedo and keep your mileage down ...just a thought

Hi, my speedo isn't working right, it says you are going much faster than you are. Does this also mean that it will be clocking up extra miles on the clock? Does anyone know ? Thanks Mileage will click round at the same rate they are linked, so if speedo is showing 60mph you will do one mile in a minute, if it shows 90 mph you will do 1.5 miles a minute, what vehicle is it, and age of vehicle it might be a simple fix, another way of doing it is speedos often go wrong so an insurance company is not to know that you might have bought a second hand speedo with more or less miles on, do they ask you each year for your current mileage when renewing, my insurance company only ask how many I might do but have never asked the following year the mileage I have done, hope this helps andy

Thanks Gaz and Andy, thats what I was worried about Andy as I have to sign a declaration of current mileage and we only could get the policy if we agreed not to go over 3000 miles so I suspect they will check or ask next year. So I need to get it fixed - apart from that its probably illegal as it is so far out! And probably clocking up an extra 1000 miles a year! Its an old transit, petrol 1987, its usually not hard to work on as there's nothing complicated

Ok what we need to clarify is, was it originally a petrol and has had a Diesel engine and gearbox put in this could be the speedo drive is wrong and reading too high, does it have the correct tyres on it they could be too small and register a faster speed, when the speedo moves up the scale does it move smoothly or jump up in jerky movements, most of these problems are easily sorted, with something as simple as changing the speedo head, andy

Hi Andy, thanks again for your reply appreciate you taking the time. It has always been a petrol engine and still is, so its not that its been changed. You could be onto something with the tyres as recently found that one of them was different size from the others, and also that had been running at wrong tyre pressure for ever! Had 2 new front ones fitted a month ago and 2 more tomorrow, and pressure is 65 now, all round, used to be 50, feels a lot better with the higher pressure. I think the speed may have always been a bit wrong but it is WAY out now! Not sure if speedo increases slowly or jumps up, am at work now so can't check, what would it mean? If its not anything too serious I can prob ask my son in law to have a look

Check the original fitment of tyres from memory I think they were fitted with 185r14 Michelin tyres, if it has been fitted with low profile tyres that will affect the speedo : 185/70/14 are low profile tyres not right for a transit the 70 denotes the profile size, a jumpy speedo can be a problem something might be tight(cable or speedo head), how long have you owned the van? Does it have five gears or four, most early petrol transits only had four gears, and when the engine went wrong a ford Sierra engine and five speed box were fitted, does the engine number match your v5 document, sorry lots of questions but something might jump out like a light bulb and give you the answer, Andy

Thanks all, its going in for some work next week so have asked them to change the speedo cable, Andy think you were right, it is a 5 speed gear box now but all the spares for that year are for a 4 speed box,so must have been changed at some point... will let garage sort it out!

You will probably need to change the speedo head to a five speed transit unit
