Hi Vern Glad there is some improvement. Bet been able to get out of bed lifted your spirits a bit there is nothing worse than been stuck in bed even when you don't feel well. Feeling uncomfortable and in pain must be a real pain if you pardon the pun. One good thing you could write down and draw plans of what you want to do in your beautiful wood now you have time on your hands, that is taking you have not already done that. Its a lovely place am sure you will have some peaceful nights there while you are still recovering. Keep your chin up Vern all are thinking of you. x

Chaos on the ward over the weekend. A polish alcoholic speaking almost no English is admitted. He also has nicotine withdrawal as well as alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
He obtains tobacco and lighters from his visitors and starts smoking on the ward. Eventually his smoking materials are confiscated by the ward sister. In an increasingly psychotic state he becomes convinced someone on the ward has stolen his tobacco.
He rummages through the clinical waste bins looking for his gear. He crawls on the floor looking. Security called several times but are short staffed and the guards can't stay. Unrestrained the polish man rants around the wards shouting in polish and breaking into the female ward and female single rooms.
Rummaging in the waste and clinical waste contaminated with blood and pathogens, he continues his search of our ward, touching my food in the process which has to be disposed of. Scuffles between him and security who are called but can't stay. Only two of them for entire hospital.
Now he comes over and empties my rucksack on the floor searching for his gear. He has hold of my keys and wallet. He is on the windowsills, trying to break open the emergency door, contaminating other patient's posssions and food, searching through their stuff lying and rummaging in their beds.
Clinical support staff unable to stop him. Security nowhere. Despite numerous complaints from me that the guy needs to be sectioned or sedated or restrained, no action taken over the weekend. Eventually he is given sleeping tablets.
I ask to speak to the ward manager who assures me security will surpervise him all night. Later this is ignored, security leave. He starts roaming the ward again. Eventually the sedation takes hold. He is asleep.
You couldn't make it up for a fly on the wall documentary!

Blimey Vern what a pain. I know when anyone like this is on a ward it is awful. When I was in there was two guys like that and you dare not shut your eyes knowing they would be into all your private things. But don't worry its the Hereford meet at the end of the month and we will be taking Rob with us so you will be able to relax a bit. .... Tom ....

Good grief Vern as if being not well isn't bad enough. What is the NHS coming too only two security on. Watched a program tonight about child mental health how there is a lack of places for them. It was all very sad. Have they not got any where you could lock your things up. Lets hope they get the guy sorted soon.

I've been off line for a week, just got a net connection & then read that ! Exactly what you need eh ? always helps the recovery along when there's a nutter in the ward ;-) Hope you got your keys & wallet back, imagine if he got hold of the van !!!! Nooooooooooooooo !!!! Be well.

Another Vern update. Gave him a ring tonight and he sounded much better. He is coughing a lot less but he did have to get some cough medicine off the nurse which took a few days to get. He is also on a daily dose of Aspirin which then had to be counteracted with an anti acid drug of sorts. He has loads to much potassium in his body which now has to be monitored. He does eat a lot of bananas which is full of the stuff so perhaps a cut back on those will help. He can now lie down and sit a lot better after his nerve damage caused by trying to get to his abscess on his liver. The abscess in question has reduced greatly but there is a cluster of little ones appeared round it, but causing no concern at the moment. He is on quiet a few other drugs which I have no chance of remembering or even spelling them. He has had a visit off Brian his dad and a few other people. There is no sign of him coming out anytime soon and I am sure he would like a couple more visitors if if anyone lives local enough. His nightmare Polish inmate has been moved and sedated onto another ward so all is at peace at the moment. I am sure I got some bits wrong but thats more or less how I remember our phone call. .... Tom ....

Thanks Tom think you have given us a good picture of how things are going. If we were closer we would go to see him. May be we could arrange a meet on the hospital car park then Vern could have a steady flow of visitors all day. Having visitors can lift your spirits but then again it depends who the visitor is

If Vernon is still in hospital when I get back I'll call in as it's just off the A1 apparently. Hopefully though, he'll be out!

Thanks for the update Tom! The original abscess was a central one which was drained and serious of little lakes round it. The central one was drained and the antibiotics are mopping up the rest - that's the theory. The antibiotics are Metronidazole en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metronidazole and Teicoplaninin en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TeicoplaninThe first rearranges bacterial DNA leading to inability to reproduce, the second interferes with bacterial cell wall formation. Both have been matched to petri dish cultures taken from the original drain and bacteria found in the blood from the infection, and have been found to be effective at zapping the infection. However, getting the drugs to the infection site is not easy, and it needs a long course of intravenous drips and injections, hence the long stay. Have fun in the sun while I'm away

Hey Bluey that would be great if you can do that if he is still in when you return. I think it is Junction 8 off the A1 and its about a mile away. After his ordeal with the Polish gentleman a nice visitor is just what he needed, but alas beggars can't be choosers ..... Tom ....

I sent you a text back and Facebook reply. Visiting is fine It's ward 8A North bed 9 (orange zone tower block centre of hospital). Times 2.30 to 3.30, and 6.30 to 8.00. They are a bit flexible though. Parking is a bugger in a big vehicle as main parking is multi storey with height restrictions and they charge stupid money as per usual. Best bet may be Corey's Mill Beefeater which is quite local and walk round. If you have a coffee in there, I am sure it will be OK.

It was great to chat and hear your plans and see your on the mend Vernon. We are now having some food and a drink.
For other visitors if anyone gets a chance we parked at the George Dragon in Graveley. There is a bus you can catch to Lister hospital or a 15 min walk.
Vernon is expecting to be in another couple of weeks.

I think I will need to have a period at home walking and building myself up, so don't see a return to work till early May. No drinking for months probably. Depends how things have healed and I can't on these antibiotics which may be given in oral form. But as you say, have one for me I can still make festivals over summer, I hope. Have a good one!

Still planning on Orkney all as we arranged. I don't think the schedule will be too bad for me. Probably will not be drinking alcohol though, and certainly not on these antibiotics which I may have for many months, but that won't bother me either way

Went to see Vernon yesterday and pleased to report he's looking well, if a little weaker and a few pounds lighter...He is unable to go home at the moment because he still needs the antibiotics intravenously but he's not bed or ward bound in between treatments. I parked up in the pub and walked up to the hospital.

Another little update on Vern. Phoned him tonight and he sure seemed tired but he then went on to tell me he had been walking the hospital and asked could he go home for his bank card. They reluctantly agreed so off he went and ended getting buses and walking another 2 miles. He had to be back for 2pm for a scan. He just made it in time, but then had to wait a good while before they could keep his appointment. His abscess has now shrunk by half but he still on plenty of drugs. He does not seem to be tied to the ward anymore and can move about when not being treated. He has had a right load of trouble and not pain free has different nurses, doctors, and a consultant took it in turns to try to get a candler ( spelling suspect) into Vern's arms. They even caused more suffering trying to get it into his foot. Well it is in now and up and running but I can't remember where in his body it ended up. He well appreciated his visits off Penny and Ron. He also enjoyed seeing Carol again on her way home from her round the world cruise. He has asked Carol to book his ferry for the Orkney Isles so all in all everything is starting to look good again. He is still an inmate for the near future but escape seems on the horizon. Even then many trips back to outpatients is imminent. .... Tom ....
