I'm ok being on high ground but one of the carers at the RNIB home I work at lives in a static alongside the river Nidd in Knaresborough and have seen a clip of flooded touring caravans from the field alongside so I fear she may have been flooded.

Yes but not the house. I have said for years that we are well protected by the huge sluice gates that operate automatically on the Manchester Ship Canal. Last night we left my daughters party to go look at Irlam Locks and could not believe the carnage. It was raging and the banks where me and Rocco go walks have been washed away. How the lock gates survive the pressure is remarkable because in the 1800s when it was built nothing like this was foreseen. I have lived here all my life nearly and never seen anything like it before. I did take videos on the phone but it was to dark to see anything. As for Anne she is well cut off last time I looked at here FB postings. She has moved her camper up to higher ground so that is safe now, but she will struggle to make the New Year meet looking at her postings. .... Tom ....

Thanks vern, only just seen that. The floods have been devastating round here, canal boats grounded , towpath washed away in big chunks, roads, walls fences and and some buildings washed away too, so many homes and businesses ruined. We had about a foot of water in bottom floor, have had no hot water for weeks so hard to clean up and washing machine died in flood and house stinks of damp and sewerage, but many far worse. But the community spirit is just amazing, teams of people helping clean up everywhere, townhall opened for free cleaning supplies, food and loads of other help, offers coming in from all over the country for everything you can imagine. One man with no connection to area hired 2 dehumidifiers and industrial jetwash and drove them up from London. A local firm is supplying and fitting free boilers to flood victims, it is so heartening. I have never seen anything like the floods, we are only about 10 yards from river, and just beyond that is canal - both combined to become raging torrent, river burst its banks and the view out the window was like a disaster movie , every time I looked out I got a shock!! But we have survived!! xx

I'm hoping the floodwaters will be receding, but it doesn't look good at the moment. Am in Preston at the moment, it has been raining for two days, saturating everything, and would only take a heavy storm to kick things off again.

Same here Vern, river really high again and road to hebden flooded, but has just stopped raining so fingers crossed!! xx

Hope you and Mia are warm and dry, Anne, wherever you are! xx It hasn't stopped raining here for the last 5 days, only bottom of garden very soggy. Luckily we are high up and sort of on a hill, so no danger of serious house flooding. Looks like Scotland, Wales and the South West are getting a fair dollop of water now too. When 300 year old bridges get swept away you know this is very serious. Not made public (surprise, surprise!), but Kielder reservoir has had to release water as it was in danger of overflowing - and that holds some amount of water!! Hard to remember its water levels were dangerously low due to drought just 2 or 3 years ago. Catcleugh Reservoir in North West Northumberland (next to the A68) has also had to release water, they reckon the amount of excess water would have been at least 2 feet above the height of the dam. Neither measures, although necessary, will have helped the floods in surrounding areas. Wonder how many other reservoirs have had to do the same? Not good

Thanks Marie.yes we are all fine here but the rain goes on, Aberdeen now, I believe. Some consolation though - we had a royal visit for Prince Andrew Yesterday !! Interesting about the resrvoirs and shows the problems of controlling floods. I work for a big company locally and they recently spent 12 million on flood defences, in partnership with council erecting 12 ft high defdences - the company didn't flood and it usually does when there are floods about - but all that extra water had to go somewhere - and guess what, I live 2 miles along the same river and we got flooded inside houses for the first time in living memory - and and 2 more miles into Hebden Bridge - devastated by floods... but my company is the majopt employer in Todmorden, they have been badly damaged by floods before and are now not insurable, and have said they would relocate if flooded again, which would basically put an end to Todmorden.... so whats the answer??

Anne now you'v done it mentioning money. Check out just below the water level in the canal. If you see a snorkel poking above the water that will be Baz waiting to pounce soon as your door is open. He will be you will get him a pint in down your local before he nips to put the money in the cash machine . .... Tom ....
