I prefer a smaller forum, more intimate, but I do see why it needs to grow, otherwise you may as well just start an internet chat room.
I don't see the forum as cliquey at all, I see a few friends who have started a forum, and they are the major contributors at the moment as membership is low, that's understandable, I've been made to feel welcome here & have never felt like I'm on the outside, unlike some other forums where you're bombarded with "become a fully paid up member" at every turn
Just my inane ramblings on the subject

I said 2000 but agree with Yogi and Tammi 500-1000 minimum. People get ill, drop out, family probs, personal problems etc. It's great if you can have a small group who never leave, or never get bored of each other, but real life isn't like that. You do need fresh ideas and even the odd new person who drops in to ask if they can run their 2kw heater off a solar panel ;D

even if you have 1000 or 2000 you only get 100 posting and contributing so you need the slack to keep an amount of active members this is what they found on the vw forums

I feel that you can never know what a person is like until you have known them for a while. On day one they may be shy, or brash, or overbearing etc: but after a time they become say more mellow or forthcoming with their experiences or their fears, likes and dislikes. If the system shut newcomers out without a fair hearing then a lot of good members would be lost. My opinion, for what it is, would be to be open to all newcomers, display clearly to them what is expected of them toward fellow members, and give them a fair trial. Should any offences occur after that then a disciplinary procedure should kick in, via a fixed number of moderators.
