We would have the option to change registration to approval only at some point and thus cap the membership or control new registrations.
If you think we should do this, vote in the poll at what number you think it should be. I haven't put any less than 400 because I don't think that's viable long term. People go on holiday, or take breaks, or are ill for a time. It's likely to be too slow in the long term.
Do you want a small forum or a large forum?
Large forum pros: More active, more content, less prone to stagnation.
Large forum cons: More difficult to moderate, more likely to be troublemakers or argumentative types, less intimate feel.

I voted for no/dont care... but what I meant was No!! I think its way too soon to think abaout capping it, there are ony a handful of regular posters at the moment and we need more to keep it going... Firefox put a very good post a while back explaining the dynamics of this and I agree with him. Small sounds nice and cosy but in reality it would probably stagnate

Small is beautiful - and more manageable, more intimate and more... friendly.

yes it is, but we are in danger of being too small... if ony a couple of us stopped posting for a while it would make a huge difference. But I dont think we need to worry about it for a while..it may settle at a naturally intimate size without us having to worry about forcing the issue

By small - 400 is only 7 times the size we are now - like a small senior school. It would be quite intimate. If we had some 0 post members we could always delete those if there was a queue of people waiting to be let in.

A definite no from me.
A restricted forum would I think exclude potential members who could contribute a great deal as well as making us appear cliquey. There are enough admins and moderators to spot any trouble as it appears.

Opinions are quite split it seems.
One way to satisfy both camps could be to have a "VIP area" that you can only access with a certain number of posts eg 250 or more
Not that many people will reach 250 posts and smaller meets / chat could go there?
That way, the general board will grow and people that want a smaller forum feel can just post about meets ups and personal chat in the more private area?

Again, may appear cliquey Vern......big W has over 10,000 members but only five hundred or so active posters.

I guess so... but then the new members wouldn't see or know about the hidden forums till they had done 250 posts and they would be part of the crowd by then, so it wouldn't matter I dunno really?!
I am actually for a bigger forum, but trying to reflect the wishes of some to limit it, I said 2000 active members, so kind of hedging my bets there!

Well I wiuld suggest that now the subject has been raised we should be sensitive to the differing wishes, at the moment it is not really an issue, but if its starts tobecome one then we will be.forewarned

We're less than a month old.....and who would want to restrict a month old baby's diet for want of worrying that it gets too fat when it becomes an adult.

Er didn't you moderators go a bit off thread there oo er mr and missus! I think it's far too early to think about limiting numbers. What if every poster was genuine and valuable? Let's wait until it becomes an issue.

Hmm, yeah, bit of a dichotomy! Well dont think we need worry just yet ... amd it may be the case that we never get to the size where we need to consider capping it

The reason I posted now was that how much promotion we do depends on it. If the consensus is we keep the forum small, it will grow by natural means very slowly. No need to do any promotion, SEO, page ranks, cross linking, satellite websites etc

It never works if you cap them. You need at least 500 to 1000 members too unless you have a very very dedicated group of friends where people know each other really well. So get recruiting guys and get posting ;D

In my opinion it already seems to be a bit cliquey here and this poll only reinforces my thinking. It also seems a rather top heavy " community" and it will remain so unless it grows rapidly and is unrestricted. Just a thought.

It does look that way to an outsider but there aren't many posting members. so it is bound to look that way. As for moderation I agree there is more than enough to cope with things at present. If and when the site expands then is the time to re evaluate. Ok OK I know I'm a contrary old bugha. I'm only sayin'

A forum must grow to survive, constant new blood brings fresh posts and old problems that the membership can deal with. Stay small at your peril. a small group soon tire of the banter and everyone has heard your jokes and opinions, saved the list of your wild camping places and generally after 12 months get bored. So grow and thrive.
