Latest update on the axle. I phoned the scrapyard in Devon to see if it was on its way, ( it was promised for today) and would you believe he has had five staff off the lorry broke down and and he has had to go and attend break downs himself. He said he is working on it right now and it will be here Monday. I have a feeling he might be giving me a few porky pies. If its here Monday I will still be very pleased and even more so if its the right one. But I can see next Friday being maybe the day. .... Tom ....

that all sounds normal Tom. scrapyard folk are a bit chaotic, especially once they've had your dosh ! Vernon-next time you see a Snap-On van parked outside a workshop, buy a 19mm socket off the guy.mine's lasted through 3 breaker bars ,with scaff tube extensions, and about 35 years. My Halfords professional set has lasted about 25 years so far, though i've had to fix the box twice !

No back axle turned up has expected. The guy promised on Friday afternoon that it would be here today but seeing it was Friday and the weekend looming up, I was sure he would not keep his promise, and did not keep it he did. I will phone again tomorrow and see when his next date for delivery will be broken. We live in hope ... .... Tom ....

Phoned again this morning and was told by the lady at the other end that it had left the yard and should have been with me by now. She said she would get the guy to phone me back has he was out at the moment. She said its a big green lorry when it arrives. Well its nearly 10 PM at night now and I can't see it arriving in the next two hours, Grrrrrrrrrrrrr. .... Tom ....

Latest up date. Just this minute phoned the scrapyard and the guy himself answered the phone. I asked him where my invisible axle is. He said which one is it. I said the AL-KL one I ordered and paid for over a week ago. He said you should have had that yesterday it went out first thing early Monday. I said no sign of it at this end and I need it desperately. He said I will check it out for you and find out whats happened. Now I am waiting for the next excuse which I don't think will happen until I phone again tomorrow unless it does actually turn up. He will probably say the lorry could not get down your small road so he brought it back. The place I ordered it through is called First Choice they source the parts out for you and give you the names of the traders who have them. They have sent me a feed back form asking about the trader I am dealing with. I can't wait to fill it in but will wait until the bitter end so I can get it all in with rage savaged words .... .... Oh it will be honest all right and maybe ambiguous if I knew what that meant. I would have filled it in by now but I don't want any bad feelings to hold it up any longer than need be. I would have canceled it by now but I need it all fitted for France at the beginning of next month. I am not even sure if I will get the right axle until I see it. I will phone again tomorrow and see what part of the world the big green lorry is in with my axle. .... Tom ....

Phoned the man who can this morning coz no axle again. He said this is ridiculous, I sent it Monday morning hoping you would get it by the afternoon, but definitely Tuesday morning. He said he would phone them then phone me back. Surprise surprise he did just that and said they won't move it because its too dirty. I thought what a load of old bull. I got the transport company phone number off him and his Ref no. The transport company was Tuffnels ( a large company). I phoned them and sure enough the guy had been telling the truth. My axle was in there Oldham depot. They said the pallet it was on had collapsed with the weight and it was very dirty. It is strange that they can bring it all the way from the scrapyard but not drop it off at my address. I decided to take the bull by the horns and go for it myself in my Vauxhaul Zafira. I put all the seats down and lined it with old curtains and set off for Oldham. We got it on a stacker truck and put wood sheets in the car and we got it loaded. Like he said it was dirty and the pallet had collapsed. My poor car can carry 7 people but this axle made it groan and it sank about 7 inches. I got it home and unloading it was another nightmare. I had to get Jose out of her sick bed to help. It was a 42 mile round trip to Oldham but I had paid for transporting it so a claim will be going in for a refund. The bonus is the axle looks like one of those refurbished ones that cost £1000,80.00. It has 4 grease nipples not just the two like the originals. Now the hard work begins, taking the old one out and refitting this new one. I will let you know how we get on once I have got somewhere under cover to do it which is in the pipeline. Here is some photos of the axle. .... Tom .... how do you print screen

go for it tom while its in the garage, whip the drums off and have a look see if the brakes are ok dont forget to check behind the wheel cylinder rubbers for fluid leaks and give the cylinder a move back and forth, tens minutes now is better than two hours in the rain outside, thinking of you andy

well done Tom ! got it ! Josie looks well impressed with it ! Doesn't look too bad a job to get that on I don't think its a hard job to sort it out Nigel, but its the weight of it. I can just pick one end up off the deck in the form its in at the moment. To look at it you would think its quiet manageable but its a lot heavier than it looks. .... Tom ....

The normal brake lining dust and crap but all seems quiet dry. Have you worked on one of these axles when you worked as a mechanic. I am thinking of taking the swinging arms off each end so its more manageable for lifting and transporting it. There is one huge stud which fits a large Allen Key in the top. This in turn has a huge lock nut that locks it into position. This looks like the only thing that fastens it onto the axle ends. I am worried that if I loosen or even take them out they also hold the tension on the torsion bars inside. These must be set to hold 5 plus tons so I would never be able to reset them if they moved. I will read up on it later. I hope not to be working in the rain. I hope to borrow a unit that the van will fit in so we are out of the weather. We missed the last date we could borrow it coz the axle was not about. We are waiting for a new date now. .... Tom ....

I thought the scrap yard was giving a load of bull Roger about them not wanting to deliver it. But I think the reason was that the weight of it was hard to handle once on the lorry. They could lift it on at the depot with a stacker truck, but at my house it was all hand ball with just me and the driver. To be honest if I was the driver I don't think I would be to happy having to unload it. It took me and Jose over an hour to get it out of my car bit at a time. .... Tom ....

Was starting to think France wasn't going to happen. Josie didn't look impressed ? No Jose was not impressed you could tell by that face, it looked like a smacked arse. I had to get her up out of bed. She was ill with that bad arm that started at the Brandon meet. She been for blood tests, Xray's, appointments galore. She went to the doctors today for the results and he thinks its gout, . Just shows don't it I do all the drinking she does none hardly but she gets the gout. Blimey Jenny hope France is going to happen, we got it all booked and payed for. We paid for a months insurance, also got and payed for the dogs passport and all his injections. See you at Dover. .... Tom ....
