You need full view pics from all four sides as I remember (unless they have changed the guidance/rules), but otherwise looks good

Hi Alec your van looks good I change my van two years ago to motor caravan I do recall they needed photo evidence of at least one side window and the cooker had to be fixed in and connect to copper piping. It may have changed now though things never stay the same for long. If you send them in I'm sure they will let you know if they need more. Good luck.

WHoop, Whoop. I now run a Motor Caravan !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Didn't have to produce any other evidence/photo's...............in a covering letter I explained conversion as shown in pics...............avoiding any mention of windows! I guess that it conforms to para. 5:1 of Annexe 11 to :- eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/AUTO/?uri=CELEX:32007L0046&qid=1431956343001&rid=5which reads :- 5.1. ‘Motor Caravan’ means a special purpose M category vehicle constructed to include living accommodation which contains at least the following equipment: — seats and table, — sleeping accommodation which may be converted from the seats, — cooking facilities, and — storage facilities. This equipment shall be rigidly fixed to the living compartment; however, the table may be designed to be easily removable. .............Alec.......

Well done Alec. I think I'll get mine done now. If only for the fact I tend to do 55mph on single carriageway and 65mph on dual carriageway, and what with all the automatic speed cameras getting ever more sophisticated, it seems prudent.

I agree Vern, also Insurance was becoming more difficult.................coupled with the fact that Ferry Companies would have treated my van as commercial ! and charged accordingly.... ........Alec........

Good job. The pros of motor caravan do outweigh the cons. Now I have a window getting mine reclassified has become a possibility... at some point in the future. Once I've (or Firefox has) resolved the current layout jigsaw puzzle involving gas hob and bottle and heater, and sink and water tank, complete with drop out holes, metal boxes, and a niche to slide my loo into, which occupies my thoughts at totally stupid times (3am). Maybe I should contact George Clark and offer him a new challenge... I have modified van insurance, costs a bit more but covers for all mods as a van not used as commercial vehicle. Pretty much any mod and any use is permitted so long as you tell them first. I can get business cover added free if / when needed. It probably costs more than insuring as a motor caravan. Don't forget about the restriction to 30 in a 40 zone for vans, even small vans like a Peugeot Partner or Berlingo. That's actually sometimes quite difficult and it means you have a huge tailbacks behind you. I see loads of other van drivers breaking this reg, and you do sometimes hear the odd story about someone getting pulled for it. A few weeks ago I had a police car behind me for a few miles in a 40 zone so drove rigidly at 29, lol, they overtook me at the first opportunity, I then crept back up to about 35 which just kind of felt appropriate for that road (keeping eagle eye out for cameras) at that time of night.

I wasn't aware of the restriction to 30 in a 40 zone for vans and can't find any reference to it anywhere eg www.gov.uk/speed-limitsDo you have a link for it on the Gov website?

No link offhand without googling but its in the Highway code. Also applies to minibuses. I used to be a minibus driver trainer and assessor. Unless the law has changed since 2000.

Half an hour googling and I can't find anything to back up my assertion above...
Maybe the law has changed, but when I was training and testing minibus drivers (1997 - 2000), the 30mph in a 40 zone applied if there were street lights. And minibuses and light commercial vehicles have the same limitations due to their passenger / load carrying capacity.
Worth noting that a motor caravan is subject to the lower limits for LGVs if being used (and laden) for commercial purposes - this includes carrying any form of stock ( would that include going to / from a car boot sale?) so a motor caravan with business use would be subject to the lower limits.
I'm sure there was a post on WC recently (within past couple of months) from someone caught speeding in an unregistered motorhome (so technically LGV), pretty sure it was in an urban area, classed as wrong speed for class of vehicle.
But very occasionally, in rare circumstances, which hasn't happened often, I have been known to be wrong... Let it not be said that I can't hold up my hand and admit to mistakes, but in this case at least my mistake is probably the reason why I have always had a clean licence and full no claims discount... And tbh, I find driving in urban areas at busy times so stressful sometimes, I am happy to stay well below the legal limit, particularly with the limited rear vision of a van.

This is why I prefer to follow in a convoy - less stressful for me as I don't need to keep checking in my mirror
