Yesterday afternoon we took the opprotunity to get finished with Christmas shopping as kids where at Grandmothers. All was good until the way home when the clutch snapped on the car so we managed to get it into a pub car park and order a taxi to get us home before all frozen bits got ruined.Today we set off in the van to check on car as someone is going to tow it back for us and things did not feel right from the start just wasnt getting power so made it to petrol station put petrol in and set off.I thought it was just it had not been used properly for a while and then with the sensor issue which i thought was resolved.Anyhoo it was not feeling right at all wouldnt go past 35 MPH so thought best get home as we were pulling up well that was it clunk it just slowed down and has stopped and wont start up again. We had to get a push to get it back to house. To say i have an upset wife is an understatment lots and lots of tears and worry that her beloved van is now no more. This is something we could really have done without and i hope for her it is fixable.Very depressed doodles house at moment

I think you need to get a professional diagnosis Will, do you know any mechanics? If you can find out what the problem is we may be able to fix it without it having to go to a garage. Haynes manuals are marvellous things and I'll come up and give you a hand.

I'd be suprised if a worn cap caused a sudden failure just like that, unless the cap is cracked or something. Hope you get it fixed. Try looking at the contact breaker points and condenser if you are not getting a spark www.youtube.com/watch?v=drSep-Bp7wE

It's the clunk that worried me Will, or was that the car just shuddering to a halt?

Yes dodgy points would certainly affect performance.

Sounds like the ignition system Will, if it is that worn, however, could also be a fuel starvation problem, I would also check the fuel filter to start with, also ask around and see if there has been any 'dirty' fuel problems in the area where you last filled up - Tesco have had loads of problems with dirty fuel!

Hi Will, have you tried cleaning all of the contacts (inside Dist Cap and on rotor arm) or are they too far gone.
Also can you let me know the year/model/engine size and I will do some reading.

Hi Will, did you order a new rotor arm and condenser as well? (may not be necessary but might be worth doing all at the same time).

Yes always best to change everything as you don't know the age of existing parts.

They couldnt find them on the database for the lt31 so i ordered the cap anyway. They are going to try and find me them and give me a call hopefully this will do for moment fingers crossed. There is 70k on clock and i am doubting if anything has ever been changed before. What a shock from having a van that still could hit 70+MPH with everything in it to struggling at 35 (not that i drive 70+MPH was a test )
