I use AVG, its free and I have used it for years with no problems. Theres a paying version too, you might have to trawl their site to find the free one but it is there somewhere

I've been using AVG for years with no problems. I started with the free versions then upgraded to a free copy of the chargeable versions, but don't use the added extras.
My husband uses Norton but it's very bloated and I'm sure it slows his system down.

I use AVGfree free.avg.com/gb-en/homepageNever had any problems and it works very well. Doesn't seem to cause any issues or take up too much space. I have heard from some that Avast is OK too and of course you would get extra brownie points on speak like a pirate day ;D

I used to use free AVG but about 18 months ago there was a dodgy update which affected both my laptop and my old netbook. I was able to do a roll back on the netbook which was on windows XP and discovered that it was well known that that update was a problem but wasn't able to find a solution to it. I wasn't able to do a roll back on the laptop (Vista) and ended up having to completely reinstall the OS so as result I now won't touch AVG with a barge pole. Luckily I can get free Kapersky (full version) through online banking with Barclays, so check to see if your bank offers something similar. I think that any decent AV software does use alot of resources as there are a lot of different processes going on at any one time. Some are worse than others and having just tried Norton free for a couple of months with my new net book, I think that Norton is worse than Kapersky for that. What you can do to get round the problem is to tweak the settings for things like updating the database so that it isn't done automatically (usually when you fire up the computer) but you choose to do it at a time when you're not using the computer for surfing, gaming etc. Also if you are not online, you could switch the security off, just make sure you switch it back on again when you go online. I also use a very very good free software called Advanced System Care by Iobit, and this is an excellent freebie. I've actually paid for the Pro version (I think it was only about a tenner) as it's very user friendly for Optimising ie doing things like checking for disk errors, registry errors, defrag, cleaning disks etc all of which will slow the computer down if not done regularly. www.iobit.com/advanced-systemcare-antivirus.html
