Hi y'all
Been so busy lately I haven't been on here for a while and keep meaning to post this because we're kinda running out of time to plan things!
Have found myself a man who I can only describe as my kind of wierd and as it has been going ok for a good few months now we decided to baptise him in the free motor homing world by going to Scotland for 2 weeks.
He spent a weekend in the motorhome with me and has done the odd night here and there but nowhere near as long as this and with the 4 dogs on board too it should be interesting!
We are going from 1st August until 14th and were thinking we would drive up to top and work our way back down... Um, where to go and what to do?
My mum is Scottish so I have been blessed with many a childhood visit to Scotland and as an adult I have visited her house in Oban many times so I am familiar with the Fort William area and the islands off Oban but north highlands I am literally out of my depth...
We would like to see some Highland games so we're looking into where we can go for that but any other ideas most welcome. Bob has a national trust membership so guess we can visit some of those. We are both culture vultures so any kind of castles or nice houses are always good with us although we wouldn't want to fill all the time with doing that.
Obviously nice walkies with the doggies is a given and I LOVE dams, the bigger the better but can only think of Ben Cruachan near Oban as obviously that's the one I visited the most so if anyone knows any others then good oh.
The other question is what to do about water? My tank will last a couple of days, 3 at most and I would normally fill up from rivers and just buy cheapo bottled water to drink but any better ideas?
Any help as always appreciated and no worries if not...
Big love...
E

Hi Chick,
What John O and Rob said.........
Notable overnights this year on the convoys :-
Applecross...........Great Pub ..we stopped outside .....plenty of wild spots around bay.......dog walks..yes
Shieldag..........Honesty site....another quiet village....views to die for
Tarskavaig.........Free ......on the beach.......isolated........sunset over the Cuillins
Mam Ratagan.........Best picnic site / lay-by in scotland......see Vid on Convoy 2 thread
Durness Campsite....Value £7/night
For Highland Games I just googled 'highland games july'
One problem you may have is time of year for your trip..........holidaymakers!!!!!
I enjoyed 9 weeks of Scotland this year, hope you have as much fun and enjoynent............Alec.......

Applecross/Sheildag/Torridon area very nice. Probably some of the most picturesque and isolated.
I really liked Arran too, but you will need a ferry.
Other places, Durness, Ullapool, Kyle of Tonge, Lochinver, Arisaig, GlennFinnan.
Don't bother with Skye or John O'Groats area. Skye is OK, but a bit out of the way and I think over-hyped when there are so many other nice places nearby.

Well we finally sat down and actually planned something this weekend although we are only half way there! Thought i would share what we have so far wih you guys...
Going to leave Saturday morning and just drive as far as we can, hoping to stop at Powfoot just past Carlisle and off A74.
Leave there mega early to high tail it to Laggan Wolftrax (wasted on me but Bob likes throwing himself down mountains on his push bike and apparently this is a good place for it!). Will spend a few hours here so i can just walk doggies and read as will probably be tired from drive anyway... Laggan Dam down the road so may find myself there as i am a tad obsessed with them!
Want to spend the night down the road near Aviemore and then we have the mroning to walk around Loch an Eilein. Heading off to Dunrobin Castle for the afternoon staying somewhere near there on 4th.
Not really much of a schedule after that. We have until 8th August to get to Lochinver where we are stpping for some highland games so we were just going to drive about a bit in the day and see where we fancy to stop at night.
I have marked a few POIs on my map:
Dunnet Head Kyle of Tonge Sheigra Stoerhead Achmelvich
Am going to contact highland games organiser to see if we can camp on site otherwise will stay in forest at Culag as that's where the games are anyway!
Kinda free and esay then but have a few more POIs on map:
Road around peninsula which has view of Summer Isles Cove (opposite Isle of Ewe)
Bob then wants to go Mountain biking again in Torridon on way down so he's looking into that...
Thought we could stay at Applecross that night.
Want to go to Eilean Donan Castle on way back down.
Few more POIs:
Invergarry Kingshouse Hotel
Thought we would see how time was and hang around Glencoe area...
Not bothered about Oban or Fort William but may do a drive by of Ben Nevis so Bob can say he's seen it up close! Hah...
Pretty loose planning i think which suits me fine but let me know if you see something which may look like a bad idea or a bit too ambitious (apart from first few days which will suck!).
Thanks to Chris for great ideas today and lovely walkie with crazy collies and poodles.

Sounds good. He will enjoy Wolftrax, I've been there working a couple of times. I've also done the walk around Loch an Eilein which is very nice. Don't know if they are there at this time of year, but look out for Ospreys on the island. The Clacaig Inn (great pub) at Glencoe sometimes let you stay at the car park if they are not too busy, but there are plenty of places to stay around Glencoe anyway.
You can park outside the pub at Applecross, or you can go to Sand Bay about 3 miles from Applecross, where you can overnight in the car park overlooking the beach. Loads of wildlife there, look out for Deer, Seals and Otters.
Have a great trip.

I would plan a trip straight up A9, you can wild a Loch Morlich, Aviemore. Then onwards and upwards towards Tongue, then hang left towards Loch Eriboll, Durness. Coast road down towards Lochinver, road down to Achmelvic can be challenging in places, not sure if you can wild there, fabulous coral sand beach! Then south to Ullapool. South of Ullapool take the A832, towards Shieldage, coast road round to towards the Torridons, towards Applecross. If you drive past the inn, towards Toscaig, sea eagles and otters can be viewed here! Once down the Bealach, the gorgeous village of Plockton is a must see, then down to Kyle of Lochalsh and, Eilean Donan Castle. Then South Towards Fort Bill, but turn off, prior for Spean Bridge, eventually taking you back to the A9, you also pass the front door of Wolftrax. I find this site handy for planning trips www.undiscoveredscotland.co.ukHTH ??
