Well, finally managed to pick up this little beauty from Devon last Wednesday. A Transit used in the past by the Heartlink charity. Stripped it of the cab bulkhead, fibreglass/plastic inner, fluorescent lights and associated medical equipment And was hoping that I could make use of the exsisting wiring.....Pah! Some hope! Was like spaghetti junction in there. The Ambulance had used a twelve volt and a 24 volt system in the past.....switches and isolators everywhere but everthing currently running off the starter battery, the second one isn't there any more. I've got a local auto electrician coming out this week to install a split charge with relay, a 240v hookup and do a complete rewire for me....160 quid the lot! Got a funny feeling I'm going be asking a lot of questions on this thread. Stay by your phone Nigel Brown!

Insulation more or less completed today....just left some gaps for the electrician to trace his wiring. I've used 35mm polystyrene foam from an old static caravan.....going to use the timber from it too. Tightly packed, the idea is to insulate against vibration as well as the cold. I intend to stick 10mm neoprene to the rib and window structures before lining.....the lining will be an experiment....more info later. 1st fix gas plumbing in place and half the layout on the drawings.

No!!!!!!! I still have the occasional night-mare since They smashed up perfectly usable/livable vans round a Track on Top Gear!! Now there is an idea for a meet ? Was heading that way at Dipyourwick on mud . A guy round here did it a few times at parties with sports cars in a field with porsches and ferraris etc and they tried all ways to prosecute him as they normally set fire to them all when finished ! They got his company in the end for some enviromental offence ?

are you keeping all the windows, and have you got a layout ? Yes mate, though half the kitchen window will be blocked. Going to remove the tinted laminate too...any tips? I've been told high pressure steam works well. Got half me layout down on drawings with dimensions. Garage, seating/bed and kitchen, starting from the rear. loads of space left for other stuff but am going to keep it basic.

Got the bulkead out, I see - always a good move. Are you going for swivel seats to increase living area when parked?

Yes Vern, the double passenger seat will come out eventually. When I get hold of a swivel seat or a mounting for one but not a priority at the mo. The bulkhead and window was surprisingly easy to remove....did it on my own in a couple of hours.

plasterboard ? experimental finishes ? 45 degree bends in a flue less than 5 foot high ? very interesting ! i'd say-ply weighs less than plasterboard, and stands up to bouncing down the highway better. as for the flue, just bite the bullet and cut another hole in the roof,it's not that big a deal, remember, all those flue bends stick out and need supporting !

I'm a bit worried about the plasterboard as well.

Excellent project, imo!
I tried to ask about the flu yesterday, but was unable. Something very unstable on the computer or website.
Anyway, I look forward to hearing more. Is the plasterboard some sort of fire-proofing? We used to have to do double-boarding ( gypsum) when converting buildings to flats.
Depressingly, the same millionaire owner ( horrible, tight, bstrd) told me recently that he forked out to change all the chimney pots on his properties. According to him, the old H - shape ones are now illegal. I never heard the like!
When we see some of the old doglegs in ancient chimneys ( say, Hampton Court), we realise what an old mate of mine always said: " the smoke goes up the chimney just the same."
Mind you, he used to say that whatever the event or happening. It seems he learnt it in the army.
For me, the worst thing about stacks is knocking them off when going under things like bridges etc. I look forward to being educated on this issue.
CO, anyone?
sean rua.

The tinted windows, you should be able to get it off by using a window scraper ( the one which has a blade fastened in it, you may use one for removing artex from ceilings.) I have removed film off windows when working for a sign company I sub to. Once you have the film off there will be a sticky film water and soap in a spray bottle will help to remove this followed by methylated spirit and kitchen towel to finish the job. I hopes this helps Lee
Tool station cat number 29412 for the scraper

Thanks Lee but I already have a scraper and am going to use a heat gun as per this vid www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmR8LlGkGJQSean and Ellisboy The plasterboard is there just to take the final finish. I's 9mm and only adds about 45kilos to the total weight....think I've removed about a hundred when I stripped the thing. It's fixed to the underlining with small drywall screws The ceiling is isolated from the walls with plastic bead and silicone and will have a 3mm gap which I will fill with flexible caulk before decoration. The underlining itself is isolated from the van structure with neoprene thus dampening vibration and allowing movement....like I said, it is an experiment and if it works I'll have a fabulous finish. If not then I can cover it all with fabric. I've read up a bit more about flues and think it will have to go straight up like yer man Brown says......not keen on cutting another hole in flimsy fibreglass though.

Last week, got mainly some furniture completed, big work for my limited carpentry skills! Window tint removed easily with a borrowed hair dryer, Mr Muscle and a bit of elbow grease. Standing wardrobe/clothes cupboard fixed to a window reveal via a couple of bolt holes which used to hold the step handrail. Fold down bed finished. Designed to take the seating cushions from my old van. It's a bit high though.....nearly two feet but had to go that way or me gas bottle wouldn't be able to stand up underneath, in the garage . Any short-arses from up Yorkshire way will have to dangle their feet if visiting

......and the experimental finish. Yes I've skimmed the bastard! I know, I know. I can hear you all shouting from here. As far as I know, no-one has ever done this in a vehicle and if it ain't been done before I'm going to have a go at it. Anyway, I put a bit of PVA in the mix as a final anti vibration measure and we'll see how it goes. Just for any Welsh visitors to this thread..... Daddy's little helper! She's rubbish at washing buckets out and she shits all over the place!

looking good mate-and if the bed height's a problem, easy enough to put a step in front. the only concern i have is whether the RSJ over the cab is strong enough to hold all the plasterwork !

Looks great, but you mad bugger Mark, never heard of anyone plastering their van!! Won't it just crack and fall off with all the vibration? How long do you reckon before its usable?
