dont think an alternator can recharge properly if lower than 10v

Yes, true. If a battery is much lower than 10v without load it is technically dead and finished. There is a possibility to revive to some extent using a desulphating charge... but results will vary depending on how bad the battery is and it can't fix internal problems like shorted cells or buckled plates.
However, I will bring genny to shap - it can give 1Kw over 9 hours on just a couple of litres of petrol. If you have boost charger and spare battery Gaz, we can attempt a fix!

this is the charger i have its meant to bring battery's back from the dead and charges up to 125ah reading the techy stuff tab .... it has done for me on a couple ill fetch that and a replacement battery to get it up an running pronto while the other charges.. push comes to shove she can keep battery for a while till she gets permanently sorted www.getgeared.co.uk/OXFORD_Maximiser_360T_Universal_12V_Battery_Chargerit says boost charge is for agm battery and cold weather charging ..again only going by what it says in the tecky stuff tab on that page If the battery is deeply discharged, the Maximiser will perform a recovery that dispenses a special high voltage (20V) and a very low fixed current. This action stimulates the battery and is preformed for a period of up-to two hours. Bulk Charge This is used to charge a discharged battery at a constant current of either 0.6 amps or 3.6 amps depending on the charging mode selected. This is ideal for quick charging batteries and it is advised that this is only done for 80-90% of the overall charge. Charge Mode Option allows you, at the press of a button, to choose between 3 charge rates for Motorcycle (600mA), Car/Boat (3600mA) and Boost (for AGM batteries and cold weather charging). Backlit LCD Display shows real-time charging rate. It shows both battery charge voltage and amperage. Battery Condition Adviser shows if the battery is able to hold charge or is in need of replacement.

Several people have said battery may be dead now, but when i said that to him he said that was rubbish and it would still charge from the alternator..!! Fingers crossed anyway, he is a lovely man but not sure about his auto elctric skills! If he is a proper auto electrician he should soon find the fault and fix it. If he is a mechanic with some electrical experience he may or may not fix it. If he is somebody like me a very old contracting or maintenance electrician then auto electrics is a completely different kettle of fish but we would usually sort it out after a few trials and errors. If the battery is still in good condition put your volt meter on it and take the voltage before connecting it back up. I know time is running out but leave it for a couple of days then take the voltage readings again. If the voltage as dropped significantly ( keep in a warm place ) then it looks like its goosed. If the charge has held up OK connect him back up and see what happens. If he has fixed it all should be OK if not it will probably drain it again. If you get to the Bothy or Ribblehead I will help Vern, Gaz, and Rob to help find the fault if its still present. I think between us we should be able to set your van on fire then you can claim for a new one on the insurance. Joking apart hope its all nicely fixed for you so you can relax and enjoy both New Year meets. Catch you later. .... Tom ....

I hope he sorts it, cos would like to spare everyone the hassle at Shap. Great that you arecoming by the way, think it should be top!

I love your description of family life. You have my sympathy (presuming it's a tooth abcess), I had the same problem at the second music meet weekend, was dosed up on penicillin so had to abstain from the baileys, licorice sambucca and several orgasms, but can't say I had the same side effects as you. It took right until the morning of the last day of the course of antibiotics before it stopped hurting though. And then I overslept last Wed and missed the emergency dentist appointment to sort it out and so now it's probably gonna be after New Year before I can get it sorted and I just know it's going to start aching again before that... I made up for it last night though - hehehe- another couple of hours of my life (between 12am and 2am) mysteriously wiped out of my memory.
