The last couple of years I have been using the ASUS EEEPC Seashell with 10" screen.
I need to look at engineering drawings on the move and zoom and pan etc. The smartphone screens are too small for this and barring a tablet which I almost got, the Notebook is a good compromise. As I do a lot of forums and email I also wanted a decent manual keyboard.
The Asus EEE PC Seashell ticks all the boxes. I upgraded the memory from 1GB to 2GB when I got it (simple task with jewellers screwdriver set. It has a 320 GB HDD and a crappy Intel processor (1.6 Mhz?) Came with Windows 7 which has proved very stable. 11 hour battery life now down to about 5 after 2 years, but still pretty good. Good wifi and energy management systems. 3 USB ports and 1 Ethernet. SD slot built in. Loads of other stuff too like camera, bluetooth etc - loads more value than the macs or ipads
It is a little slow, compared to bigger machines as would be expected, but fine for internet, pdfs, email, even streaming videos. I'm glad I did the memory upgrade as it would have been underpowered in its original state. It has stood almost 2 years of abuse going everywhere in bags or rucksacks with little sign of wear apart from the buttons on the trackpad. It suffers from a very occasional white screen of death now, which I think is a cooling problem, as I can't hear the fan going any more. Always boots up again though.
Cost when new about £230 + memory upgrade
8/10 Highly recommended - but I think they are at the end of the manufacture line on this type of model. I would buy something similar from ASUS as my next computer.
